What gaming system for 9 year old DS?

Previously he loved the Scooby Doo Learning Company games from the early 2000s, and we play Nancy Drew HER Interactive games as a family, which are amazing and which we all love.

A few months ago a friend of DH gave us his old wii. He loves playing the Poke Park and Mario Kart games with DH, and a bit of Batman Brave and the Bold, SpongeBob Squigglepants and Kung Fu Panda. Unfortunately, the wii disc drive has failed, we bought another complete wii secondhand on ebay, which also doesn't work, and now I'm waiting for a brand new replacement drive. I need to have a back up in case this also fails.

We've been looking at a Switch, but I don't want something portable as I would prefer if he keeps the gaming to one room for now. Can you just hook the switch up to the TV? DS is autistic, and is VERY attached to the wii, so he's not fussed about which other console we get. He has expressed interest in the Zelda games.

I am totally out of the loop with this stuff, and would really appreciate some advice.

Zelda, the Pokémon and Mario games can only be played on a Nintendo console so it sounds like you may want to go with a Switch.

Yes, the switch can be hooked up to the tv. You'll need to buy some extra controllers so you can play with him.

Thank you so much for the replies. I was wondering about the Nintendo thing, so it's helpful to have that confirmed. :)

The Nintendo switch really is the most child and family friendly console, you can't really go wrong with it.

An Xbox will last into his teenage years, ds got his first one around that age & now has the series X model.

Thank you so much. DH going to get one tomorrow (which enough controllers for all of us 😀). Any recommendations for a pokemon game for the switch?

Yes the switch can dock (just not the switch light) my 9 year old has Pokemon shield which he’s been playing on for a long time, by contrast he completed Pokémon diamond very quickly … so depends what you are after. Both good but shield is newer

I’d maybe do some more research before jumping to buying a switch. DC has had one for three years and played with it twenty times if even that, as far more interested in Roblox

Friend bought her DS a PS4 )I think) around the same time and he still plays with it every weekend. Because it’s interactive, he chats to his friends while playing it.

We have had a Switch for several years now and until last week it has only been played on the tv whilst in the dock.

There is a parental control app you can download to your phone and set a time limit so it turns off after whichever time you specify (gives a 5 min warning). You can set it for individual days etc and keep an overview of how long each player has played.

Mine love the Zelda games, they're so well done.
