Is anyone familiar with Slaithwaite?

We are looking at a move to the Huddersfield area next year, for a job opportunity. We are currently in Buckinghamshire and not familiar with Huddersfield at all. Looking for a small town but with some amenities, and Slaithwaite looks appealing. Does anyone know what it's like to live there? Obviously we will be doing a recce in the near future, but it's good to get a feel from what others think first!

Yeah it's generally considered a nice area, same with other areas like Holmfirth and Lindley.

Have visited. Really quaint. Scenery beautiful, lucky you!

It’s a lovely village. I believe it was voted the best place to live by the Times in 2021 or 2022.

The first thing you need to know it’s pronounced “sla-wit”

RandyAndTheRainbows · 07/10/2023 22:07

@SuprisingHorse yes that's the first thing I always think of when I see the name Slaithwaite! The pronounciation.

It is a beautiful area indeed. Enjoy.

Great people and village vibe. Upwardly mobile. Pig to drive in and out of from the motorway. If I had to commute that regularly I’d be tearing my hair out. Trains are constantly cancelled.

Lovely surrounding countryside.
Reasonable selection of shops, cafes, bars and places to eat.
The centre can be busy with traffic, there are a couple of industrial estates close to the centre so lorries as well as cars.
Not a lot of parking. There is a train station, so people tend to leave their cars in the village and catch the train to Leeds/Manchester. It used to be very busy on a weekend with the ale trail although I’m not sure if that’s still as popular.
It has a swimming pool and leisure centre at the moment but it looks likely to close due to the council being broke.
It’s hilly around here 😊
Meltham
Holmfirth
Honley
all worth a look at.

Slaithwaite is lovely - you'll soon be calling it Slawit like the locals! Marsden is also nice a couple of miles down the road. Huddersfield has had not the greatest reputation in recent years but the town centre is currently being regenerated and I do think it's working. It'll be a bit of a shock from Buckinghamshire but the outskirts of Huddersfield itself are lovely. If you make the move - welcome!

BarbaraofSeville · 08/10/2023 09:29

Agree with everything said so far about Slaithwaite and all the other places mentioned. Lovely part of the world (I live about 40 mins away but go walking out there quite often).

However, you should be aware that flooding can be a serious issue in the valley bottoms and that the train line is often unreliable and overcrowded. You might want to include the live train information website/app in your recce, possibly also doing a dummy run if you're wanting to use it at commuter times.

It's really beautiful, gets busy in the pubs with people from manchester and Yorkshire doing the ale trail especially in the summer!!
It's somewhere I always think "I'd love to live here" but in reality maybe a bit toooo small for me! But very pretty and good train links to Manchester and Leeds

Clawdy · 08/10/2023 09:37

Slaithwaite and Marsden both lovely places to live.

GCSister · 08/10/2023 09:47

It's lovely - so is Marsden.
If you don't need to be directly on the train line then Meltham is also nice.
Also, over the border into Saddleworth. Lots of people from Saddleworth work in Huddersfield.
