All they had to do starting at age 10 was keep their bedroom tidy.. and put away any toys.
I didn't have children to do my housework.
Let them be children.

OK mine have been doing that for years, want them to take a bit more responsibility for themselves and wondering what it gets do. Definitely still children but dont want the spoilt entitlement of some or the inability to be independent. They do beavers and cubs which helps with independence and responsibility but interested in other ideas too.

Please remember kids are only kids for 18 years.. and adults for 60 plus years.
Their time will come.
Mine automatically helped when they were into teens.. clearing dinner table into dishwasher etc.. putting their own laundry away.. but l never ever asked them to do any big chores.

I have a yr3 DD. We are getting her to be responsible for her stuff. She puts her own clothes away after we have folded them up in a pile. She mostly tidies up after herself and we help her tidy her room at the weekend. She packs her own school bag.

She helps us with what we are doing e.g. setting the table, unloading the dishwasher, hanging out laundry or cooking but these are things she mostly enjoys doing. Generally she prefers to help us rather than do things alone.

Both of mine (9 and 10)

Keep rooms reasonably tidy
Put clean clothes into drawers
Straighten beds and sofa if they've used it
Set and clear table
Load and unload dishwasher
Fold clothes out of tumble dryer
Feed water and scoop cats

They have done for years
It's just part of family life in my eyes

slithytoveisascientist · 08/10/2023 15:06

It's also not "my housework" it's everyone's
As it's everyone's house

Knivesandforks · 08/10/2023 15:09

@slithytoveisascientist thank you! I was thinking that - it's family work!

Mine don't do anything and they are 11 and 13. They take the p!! 🤯🤯

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 08/10/2023 15:14

Started with putting toys away then gradually moved onto tidying room, making bed, setting table, clearing the table, changing own bed, loading or unloading dishwasher, hanging out washing, helping out with cooking dinner and sometimes making dinner over the years (teens now). I see it more about learning life skills really.

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo thank you yes it's less about me relaxing while they work and more about independence and life skills. I taught myself to cook in my 20s as my mum who was the main cook only ever let me help stir etc but I didn't kniw howto make a whole meal!
