One day in Hong Kong - what should I see?

...and how best to get there?

I have one free day and would like to see one or two things before I leave. Staying in North Point. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

I have done this, had a day on a business trip. I took the tram to Victoria Peak which I enjoyed, hear it gets very busy but I went first thing so was quiet. Then I walked around, stopped by a temple and took the river boat over to the other side. Looked around a couple of shopping centres, so many shopping centres! And stopped for drinks and food. I was by myself so didn't stray off the beaten track or try the night life

Could go and see big Buddha via cable car by using the metro (it's just past Disney where I am right now)

Or metro into centre and do tram up Victoria peak or do the tall building at ifc

Have a look on say Klook which sells tickets to things and see what appeals

CrushingOnRubies · 07/10/2023 15:05

Go up the peak. But only if it's a clear day!

Get the bus out to Stanley

Soak up the atmosphere of an incredible city

Wonder around Victoria park

Get a ferry out to one of the islands such as Lamma

Go up in the observation wheel and explore the harbour area

Get the cable car up to the big Buddha, the views are incredible. Afterwards go up the Peak late afternoon so you're there in daylight and as the sun sets. I wouldn't bother with the tram as it's time consuming and doesn't add much to the experience. It's easy to get a taxi or bus. In the evening go to Sugar bar at the East Hotel for food/drinks.

Victoria Peak for sure

RampantIvy · 07/10/2023 16:54

Victoria Peak but only on a clear day, Stanley market, Lantau Island.

I enjoyed the park which is where Kowloon walled city used to be. The peak was nice but it was freezing when we went. Riding on the trams and the ferry is fun.

You will be near Causeway Bay if you want to do a bit of shopping. You can take the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) to get to Kowloon side.

If you are going to the Peak you can get the MTR to central and then walk to the Peak tram.

It's a shame you've missed the mid autumn (lantern) festival but October is a good time to visit as it is usually still warm but less humid than the summer months.

Enjoy Grin

Thanks so much everyone. Yes the lantern festival looks amazing. Looks like I'll head to Victoria's Peak. I'll be up early so will hopefully will miss the crowds. Am really looking forward to it.

Star Ferry over to Lantau Island

Laurelai · 07/10/2023 20:38

Lantau Island looks beautiful, thank you!

Victoria Peak is a definite - it’s awesome at night as well.

Although for evening get one of the tourist ferries for the light show (do they still do the light show? I’ve not been since pre-covid)

Enjoy it! I bloody love Hong Kong.

unsync · 07/10/2023 21:13

Go to the peak, then ferry to Lantau to see the Buddha and then the cable car back. Hong Kong Park (on island) Tea Ceremony is enjoyable, or a wander through Kowloon Park off Nathan Road (MTR to TST) if you want a bit of chill time.

The Peak (but early to avoid queues) , The mid level escalators to see snapshots of real local life, Star Ferry, Shanghai Tang to gaze at the beautiful silks, The light show from near the star ferry terminal (it always used to be 7pm) , A tram. A final fun thing was the basement of Golden Computer Cente at Sham Shui Po - absolutely bonkers piled to the ceiling with all sorts of gadgets and accessories for super cheap prices. Its been a while but I wouldn’t bother with more than one market (Stanley/ Ladies / Temple Street) as they sell pretty much the same stuff.
