Grocery prices in Australia

Things have gone up here recently, but not at the level of the UK. Whenever I have been home (UK) prior to covid, I was always amazed at how cheap things were. I gather this has changed.

I’ve just been to Woolworths and bought this top up shop for $55.65 (£29.03). How much would it cost where you are? All were regularly priced aside from the instant meals, which were half price ($7.50).

Not what you were asking (Aussie here) but have you an Aldi nearby? They're so much cheaper than Coles or Woollies.

Hollyhead · 07/10/2023 04:17

About the same, possibly a bit less. Less if unbranded ketchup bought - a Heinz of that size is £4 but supermarket own only £1.50.

mjf981 · 07/10/2023 04:25

Yes I do the bigger shops at Aldi - so much cheaper.
The ketchup was $5, but is often on sale for $3.50.

I don't find aldi cheaper than Woolies sor Coles as I already buy value brands. Woolies sauce vs Heinz etc. But our food bill is high around $1700 for the month for 2 adults 3 kids. We eat most meals at home and OH has left overs for lunch most days. We try to have 2 veggies meals a week and 1 fish meal. We only do packaged snacks out of the house to minimise that cost too.

I am a terrible gardener so can't get cheaper food that way.

meatbaseddessert · 07/10/2023 05:14

NZ here. Just priced this all up in the Countdown (Woolworths) app. $76 NZD ($71AUD, $37 GBP)

Confused

Tim tam double coat? Are you MADE of money?! Grin

meatbaseddessert · 07/10/2023 05:15

Just saw your ready meals we half price so take $14 off my $76. Still...

mjf981 · 07/10/2023 05:22

Haha double coat Tim Tams are a gift from the gods!

UK here and I reckon that would be about £23, although we don't have tim tams here 😭 so I just added £2 for those, no idea how much they'd be. I miss the Australians who used to bring Tim tams into my old work place!

Same ketchup in NZ $6.60.

Ha ha yes, Tim Tams are indeed a gift from the gods ! This week in Woolworths, AU $4.50 so GBP £2.30.

mellongoose · 07/10/2023 06:15

I would expect to pay £25 or less for that lot in a convenience supermarket (where it's slightly more expensive).

*please send Tim Tams. 😁

mdinbc · 07/10/2023 06:56

I just did the same shop on line to compare in Canada, and came up with $55.24 CDN which equals $63.23 Aus, so more expensive here. I couldn't see what the round thing under the butter chicken was, so I didn't include that.

And yes, we do get Tim Tams here!

Deathraystare · 07/10/2023 07:49

In UK not Aus.

I went into a convenience store for a can of drink. Yes I knew it would be expensive as those stores usually are, but bloody hell, without even thinking I put my card on the machine for the princely sum of £2.50! Still cannot believe what I did!

Has fish gone up much in the land of Aus? It has here.

TheThingIsYeah · 07/10/2023 08:02

@Deathraystare That's just blatant greedflation. I'd like to hope that once the mortgage rate rises really begin to bite over the coming months, such places will get their comeuppance and go out of business.

Although I reckon half those "convenience" stores - you know, the ones with the ornate fruit and veg displays - two doors down from an identical one - are money laundering fronts anyway.

TheChosenTwo · 07/10/2023 08:15

I’d expect to pay around £25 for the things I can see, what’s the thing between the ready meals and the bottle of smoky sauce?

Mintearo7 · 07/10/2023 08:23

Yes about £25 max if the ready meals were half price.

cherkl · 07/10/2023 08:31

Aussie living in central London here, I’m always shocked at how expensive my grocery bills end up when I’m back in Australia!

I reckon that would cost just over £20 at one of the local smaller supermarkets near me. But I do have a lot of options where I’m based so that helps. I’ve seen similar meals at tesco/sainsburys for £3-3.50 standard price and most of the other items are quite affordable.

Only exception is soy sauce & oyster sauce which could drive the basket price up a lot depending on brand. I’m not familiar with the one in your photo OP but the premium Lee Kum Kee oyster sauces (and similar Asian products) are more expensive here but if we’re just picking up a local brand, the store brands are very competitive, though don’t know how good they are comparatively.

mjf981 · 08/10/2023 02:41

Its dental floss under the ready meals.
Seems like we are about comparable with the UK now, or maybe still slightly more. This was also at a Sydney 'metro' Woolies so likely a bit more than a standard sized store.

Nothing sensible to add except I am jealous of the TimTams. I lived in Sydney for three years in the early 2000s and they are one of the things I miss most, along with RM Williams boots and Scanlan and Theodore fashions.

Chocolate Royals with dark chocolate and plain marshmallow are what I miss. They were the rare treat of my childhood. Now those bastards at Arnotts have withdrawn them but left the milk chocolate and strawberry marshmallow ones. Blech!

ChokeToDeathOnThreePoundsOfMeat · 08/10/2023 03:00

According to their website , that honey was around 10 dollars. I can’t remember ever seeing a jar of raw organic honey in a British shop of that size, but it would cost considerably more than that. Probably £20-30. It’s a hellishly expensive item in the UK.

So to buy the equivalent food, substituting a different brand of chocolate biscuits, would probably cost around £65 or possibly a bit more.

WelshWannabe · 08/10/2023 03:46

TimTams give me wicked heartburn.

We get HelloFresh now for 5 meals a week. Then spend about $120 on ingredients for the other 2 meals, breakfast and lunches so we sit at about $250/$270 a week for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens)

It seems like a lot, especially with the HelloFresh, but saves us money as we're not going to the supermarket as often or wasting as much food.

Can't wait until we move back the the UK next year though.

WelshWannabe · 08/10/2023 03:55

And to relate my previous comment to the op...

The reason we opted for doing it this way is because before we'd be popping into Woolies or Aldi 2 or 3 times a week and spending over $100/$150 at a time and not seem to get much for it.

Woolies prices are crazy in general though to be fair.

Tourmalines · 08/10/2023 04:07

aussie here , well , most of my life . I just don’t get the hype about Tim tams 🤣

GhostGatto · 08/10/2023 04:25

Just did the same for my usual online supermarket in Milan Italy adding a pack of similar biscuits as we don't have Timtams and 2x Soy Sauce as we don't have Oyster Sauce. Total came to €46.65 so £40.37. Food has always been expensive here Italy, especially the north and anything that's imported like Soy Sauce is costly.
