My birthday is coming up and me and hubby are finally getting some time away from the kids for my birthday meal/date night.
can anyone recommend some nice places to eat? I used to live in Birmingham about 8 years ago but it’s changed so much already!

Price ?

Adams is Michelin star but has good lunch menus

la galleria lovely Italian. Not too spendy.

new budget place and still tasty - bundobust - indian street food

We went to Purnells and it is the best Michelin star restaurant we’ve eaten at. It’s reasonably priced and we loved the food. I heard good things about Purnells Bistro, but it closed during lockdown.

Adams near the Town Hall is a push-the-boat-out treat for us as we’d likely spend £300+ there.

The Ivy on Temple Row is good value.

Mowgli inside Grand Central is very good value Indian street food.

La galleria!

Orelle on Colmore Row towards the library. Great food and views. Not too expensive.

SassyPants87 · 06/10/2023 18:58

I’m thinking about £200 for the both of us including a bottle of wine?

Another vote for Adams

We ate dinner there on a Groupon voucher. Don't know if they're still running the deal.

Opheem was absolutely fabulous. Took an incredibly fussy client who loved it.

MrsDrudge · 06/10/2023 19:19

Another recommendation for Adams - the set lunch menu used to be fantastic in terms of quality and value, but our last visit was before lockdown so maybe I’m not up to date.
Simpsons in Edgbaston has great food but the main dining room is very airy and minimalist and noisy. However, there is a big window into the kitchen which is interesting, and the gardens are beautiful. Expensive though.
The Ivy is always a good shout too.

Gaucho would probably come in under your budget and I think it’s lovely, particularly if you like steak.
Adams is really good, though maybe slightly above budget.

or 670grams, that’s really good if you want a tasting menu but a less formal setting.

Plates by Purnells has amazing tapas which was utterly delicious. Tiny kitchen so things come out as they're ready. I ate there last month as a group of 5 and we were advised to order 3 or 4 dishes each. We were stuffed but still managed it all as it was so good! Cost was around £40 per head including a couple of beers. Totally recommended.

The Wilderness in the Jewellery Quarter is absolutely amazing, very cool unstuffy atmosphere. A little bit over your budget with wine but so worth it.
Opheem is fabulous too - kind of Indian influenced fine dining. When we were there the crowd seemed a bit more trendy, and it is a bit more instagrammable if you like that kind of vibe.
Depending on when you are going, Carters are supposed to be back in Brum from mid November, I believe in new premises. I've only eaten at their pop up summer project in Worcestershire (and am going again next week) and absolutely loved it but we'd never managed to get a table at their Moseley restaurant.

TheMousePipes · 06/10/2023 19:43

The Oyster Club is Adam’s little brother if fish is your thing? Really nice.
Opheem is amazing.
Drinks at The Grand first?

TheMousePipes · 06/10/2023 19:45

Carters was incredible in Moseley, looking forward to seeing where they open next.

TedWilson · 06/10/2023 20:17

Adam's is quite an acquired taste I think.

Also consider-

  • Purnells
  • Fumo
  • The Highfield (Edgbaston not city centre, gastronomy b, my personal favourite)
  • Opheem
  • Plates has already been recommended - lovely food but the restaurant layout is a bit odd depending where you sit
  • The Ivy
  • Dishoom - but you can't book at night if you are there the next day though worth a trip for brunch

La galleria!

Seconded. The food is lovely.

The ivy has a nice atmosphere too, but prefer the food at La Galleria.

munchbunch12 · 06/10/2023 20:25

Another vote for La Galleria, I've been going for years and it never disappoints. Cucina Rustica and Pasta di Piazza are also great, although they are a bit of a walk (or a short tram ride) away as they're near St Pauls in the Jewellery Quarter.
