What life skills are you going to teach your children?

What chores or tasks have you assigned to your children to become involved in household duties or to take responsibility for and why?

What life skills would you teach and how do you think this could help them?

Mine are grown up, but they both learned to cook and to clean. They looked after pets. They shopped, washed and ironed. They learned how to do basic car maintainance- tyre changing, pumping up and so on. They learned tedious formal manners in case they ever needed them (dd does in her job and is very grateful-ds is still amused by this!) They listened to a wide range of music (by default-I played different sorts all the time.) We had a wide range of age appropriate non fiction books around. We discussed politics, critical thinking and we talked a lot about relationships and sex (whether they wanted to or not!) And they had what Mumsnet would consider a scary amount of freedom and independence!
