Incredibly bored at work - suggestions please

I'm seconded to a project through work, this is my second day.

Shifts are 10 hours long, sat at a desk. With no word of a lie I must have done no more than 30 minutes work yesterday, and today doesn't look any more promising. Fortunately there's no restrictions about internet / phone use but there's a limit as to how long I can stare at my phone for.

My colleagues seem unmoved by the tedium, whereas I can already feel myself becoming slightly unhinged. It doesn't help that my usual role is very dynamic and fast paced, something I've quickly come to realise I thrive on.

So far I'm halfway through a Kindle book, have ordered a couple of Christmas presents and route planned a couple of new walks for my rest days. I'm here till early November unless I throw myself down the stairs first

What on earth am I supposed to do to fill the time? Any and all suggestions gratefully received

This is your opportunity to write that book that is deep inside you.

Sadly if there's a book in me then it's very deep inside ☹️

I'm already a Kindle book down and have started an actual physical copy of The Pillars Of The Earth - at over 1000 pages that should keep me entertained for a while!

Ideas to fill time:

  • nyt website has wordle and lots if puzzles
  • think of something you've always wanted to do, or things you enioy. Write them down. Learn more. Ie if you're into running you can read about running, technique, plan races.
Or you can do courses in things online called moots I think. For fun, uni's do courses to learn about the world sometimes for free.
  • plan your Christmas shopping
  • planning : exercise, diet, to do lists, housework, gardening, trips, what to get people for birthdays
  • try and automate lots of parts of your life like bills and your food shop :)
  • learn how to take effective breaks at work e.g mini walks, or stretches at your desk that are subtle, or mindfulness
  • break up the day with different breaks at different hours
  • see if you can wfh so you can do some of your chores in your gaps
  • talk to your colleagues?

Put your head down and have a little sleep.

We had a month waiting for "the new computer system" to start working. The company had phased out and shut down the old one but the new one wasn't able to hit the ground running as expected so us minions had absolutely nothing to do.
I took in colouring books and felt pens, the kind with intricate patterns to colour in, and then pulled out the pages and shared the patterns and pens with anyone else who wanted something to do.
Must have lost the company ££££ but we had to be there ready to start immediately the new system started working.

Can you write a book about your job where you have nothing to do? Smile

Day 1. The fly on the windowsill has found a friend today and I spent five minutes watching them fly around the potted plant. That sort of thing.

CAn you get your other work emails/mandatory training on your phone so you can get through it all.

Can your actual job give you any projects to work on in the down time? They may have a long list of things that need looking at but no-one normally has time to think/research/do them?

These are all such good ideas, thank you!

There's no way of accessing my own stuff without a laptop. I'm assured there are no laptops spare (which is another story) Frustratingly there's SO much I could be doing to help out 😬

Colleagues are fine but I don't know them, and there's a limit to how much you can talk to one person in a day (there's only two of us in this role)

I've cracked open Duolingo again and am also memorising the US states. I've ordered some Christmas presents and sorted some other bits of boring life admin like mobile phone contracts. My holidays next year will be EPIC!!

At least it's only till the end of the month 😆
