Currently working our way through the Roald Dahl collection but they’re not loving it as much as expected.

Can anyone recommend a really funny story book?

Diary of a wimpy kids book are funny, little life stories of the boy going through his younger years with lots of mishaps. They are also movies too

Second diary of a whimpy kid. Also Captain Underpants.

People like David Williams books, I don’t but others find them funny.

We tried them a couple of years ago but they didn’t quite ‘get’ the Americanisms… will definitely give them another try now they’re a bit older, thanks!

Ooh captain underpants would be a good one.

Not been overly keen on the David Williams books. Worlds worst children went down ok

13 storey treehouse

viques · 05/10/2023 17:57

What about the TinTin books, lots of humour, you need to use good reading skills like inference to follow the plots.

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 05/10/2023 17:57

Mr Gum
The Treehouse series

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 05/10/2023 17:58

treehouse series might be a bit young though

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 18:01

Cressida Cowell's dragon books?

bge · 05/10/2023 18:03

Barry Loser is very funny. Particularly the audio book, which is read by a brilliant wee actor. A lot of the phrases from the book have come into our family lexicon (like ‘thank’ for a small favour which is too inconsequential for multiple thanks)

LovelyMMOG · 05/10/2023 18:05

if he’s a keen reader, Wodehouse is good for a 10yo. Otherwise Mr Gum is great for any age.

HelpNeededBeforeIHaveABreakdown · 05/10/2023 18:06

Eoin Colfer, The Legend of Spud Murphy is great!

Pootle40 · 05/10/2023 18:09

Space Band or Danger Gang by Tom Fletcher

AllotmentTime · 05/10/2023 18:11

Rabbit and Bear if he's a fairly young reader (ie if he's more Fantastic Mr Fox / Twits fan than the longer Dahls). They're very very funny, my DD at 9 was listening to us reading them to DS.

salamithumbs · 05/10/2023 18:11

The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog (and sequels) or maybe The Giggler Treatment (silly but might appeal!)

Croissantsandpistachio · 05/10/2023 18:14

100% Mr Gum. I find them hilarious and I'm an adult, my 9yo can't get through a page without laughing.

drinkwithanumbrellainit · 05/10/2023 18:15

Agree Mr Gum, 13 Storey Treehouse books and Cressida Cowell. Also love King Coo and Cosmic Atlas of Alfie Fleet.

GarlicBroccolini · 05/10/2023 18:20

Some great recommendations, thank you all!

It’s actually not for them to read by themselves… even though they’re nearly ten, we still do bedtime stories 🙈
They’re both (DT’s) very competent readers but incredibly reluctant to actually read by themselves for enjoyment.
Hopefully one of the options here will spark a love of reading and they just might pick up a book once in a while!

I loved the Jennings and Darbyshire boarding school ones (by Anthony Buckeridge) , but not sure if they may have dated. Also the William books by Richmal Crompton, set around WW2.

whatsinanameeh · 05/10/2023 18:25

At that age my boy loved the Mr Gum books and captain underpants

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 18:42

Oh, if it's read aloud that's different! William? And someone said Jennings? One of mine loved Jennings-but you do have to editorialise to make it make sense to modern children!

impressivelycunty · 05/10/2023 19:18

Julian Clary's The Bolds are a great series and Harry Hill's kids books are also fab. Hated the Walliams books - they are so badly written!

Sawaranga · 05/10/2023 19:21

Mr Gum is funny and fun to read aloud

EllaMenopee · 05/10/2023 19:24

Bunny vs Monkey. Ds thinks they are the funniest thing ever.
