I get hicups regularly but they do tend toake me sick and extremely distressed. They come at the worse times and usually when it happens, it comes and goes in spells. There were a few weeks where I got hiccups about 2 or 3 days and they were on and off like spasms. They were awful. Googling hiccup cures didn't work. I was resorted to banging my chest with my first and strangling my neck in the hope they stop. My chest is often left sore then for for up to a week or two at a time because I am really hammering my chest to fuck to stop the hiccups.

Hold your breath and swallow as many times as possible before you have to breathe again. Works best with a drink! I get hiccups a lot and this always seems to work.

If I am desperate a heaped teaspoon of granulated sugar stops them for me every time.

Drinking a glass of water from the wrong side works here too. You have to drink continuously though (breathe through nose) until the glass is empty.

Another thing that works for me is to close my eyes, relax everything and do slow shallow breaths as if asleep. However obviously difficult if you’re not somewhere comfy and if you’re already wound up about the hiccups.

Get someone to pull on your tongue. An actual doctor told me it’s an actual medically recommended thing. Worked the one time I did it to DH.

Eat a spoonful of peanut butter.

A teaspoon of sugar. Crunch it up and swallow.
Not only has it worked every time on anyone I’ve tried it with, it’s actually listed as a medicinal effect in the listing in the British Pharmacopoeia.
I always knew my pharmacy degree was worth it 😁

If I’m doing it for myself, I take a big breath, hold it and then swallow while still holding my breath.

If I’m trying to stop someone else’s hiccups, I ask them what they had for tea last night. If they answer quickly without having to think, I then ask about the night before. It’s always worked so far. I tried it because I once saw a teacher do it. I think it must distract the mind or something and people don’t usually notice you’re doing it to stop them hiccuping.

Spoonful of white wine vinegar. No idea why, but it works!

It's all about gaining control of your diaphragm. I take the deepest lungful of breath I can manage, and hold it for several hiccups. Then I slowly let out some breath, and quickly breathe in again before I hiccup again. Repeat letting more breath out, and breathing more in, so I can really feel the stretch in my diaphragm. Use the diaphragm to control those breaths and you'll regain control of it.

Another method I use is to take a big mouthful of water, and hang upside down kff thr side of my bed so my head is fully upside down. Then slowly swallow thr water bit by bit while taking deep breaths in and out. Again, it's about taking control of the diaphragm - you need to control it to be able to breathe while swallowing water, so it forces it back under your control.

We do the brilliant sip-swallow method. Take the smallest tiniest sips of water, swallow them quickly one after the other. Keep the glass at your mouth so you're not having breaks. Keep this up for a minute or two.

The goal is to interrupt the hiccup with a downward swallow as it's coming up. This sort of re-sets the oesophagus and they instantly stop.

Works every single time, tried and tested on multiple generations of my family and friends and can be done in public without looking like a loon.

Thank you so much for all of your replies and help.. I am going to screenshot these and put them into a separate folder and I hope something helps.

I think there is a problem with my upper chest and stomach area. It keeps going into spasms. So about once every week or two weeks I get a day of hiccups. I think a lot of it is down to my job sometimes. Animals are provided with more respect and dignity when it comes to breaks and meals. I am lucky if I get a lunch break and often it's on the go. Often I am just not allowed to go and digest a meal during my work. I went for a break a few days ago, sat down to lunch, took a bite and I had to them run to attend to an emergency situation and there was no one else to cover it. I'm constantly getting sick.
