What's an unexpected/unusual perk of your job?

Dh came home with another freebie tonight which prompted this post.

He's a taxi driver. We live near a 'naice' coastal touristy place with a large number of expensive restaurants and very high end wine/cocktail bars.

His random perk of the job is free glasses 🥂 😂

Not just any old pub glasses. Really beautiful, heavy, expensive wine/cocktail/gin/whisky/champagne glasses. Customers leave them in his cab or in the cab office he works out of. There's no way to give them back...they could be from any one of 100 or more walking distance establishments. So any that are left in his cab he brings home...any that are left in the cab office gets added to their collection and the drivers basically have a free glassware shop 😂

We've slowly been replacing our IKEA glassware with the ones he brings home which are far nicer...it was a very unexpected perk of being a cabbie.

Anyone have any more random job perks? Unfortunately my own job is utterly boring with no similar experience!

We get free tea, coffee and milk which is nice as haven't had that in previous jobs and means less stuff to take in.

Work pays for a flu jab.

Used to work at a coffee shop in an airport, but landside. Was given many bottles of perfume, alcohol - and once even two huge tins of amazing olive oil, from people who had forgotten the liquids rule. Also tried some supposedly very excellent whisky on a Christmas Eve because the customer (whiskey expert) didn't want to waste her little flask.

That was the only unexpected freebie, though!

I work in fintech and have access to financial modelling software that allows me me to build really good budgeting forecasts.

Niche, but useful.

Could you recommend a budgeting tool that is easy to use for the average person? Modelling software is probably beyond me but I want to work on my household budget a bit more.

My perk is free broadband as part of my remote working contract. I didn't realise that until I started!

Loads of stuff. But Eurostar tickets to Paris from £59 is nice. £79 for first class.

Free travel on TfL services too.

WhamBamThankU · 05/10/2023 10:43

Small batch, artisan alcohol!

PinkFootstool · 05/10/2023 10:51

Public sector, so not a lot 😂 Even the gossip I know I can't share with anyone so team meetings are cathartic when there's a relevant story in the papers and we yap about it then!

I got a cracking pair of Dr Marten steel toe capped boots in my last job. Still have them now.

CornedBeef451 · 05/10/2023 10:52

I once got an unexpected frozen turkey when I temped at a scrap yard.

I work somewhere which is very disorganised and poorly managed and I’m actually leaving soon as I find it very stressful. However an unexpected perk is that nobody ever knows what anyone else is doing and I don’t really have a line manager, so sometimes I can just take a random afternoon off and nobody even notices. Such a strange place!

SistersNotCisters · 05/10/2023 11:01

Weight loss.

Granted it's more from running around breaking my back, wearing through my shoes every few months and going without my unpaid breaks because we're struggling to keep up but hey, I'm finally getting down a bit from a size 16.
The pennies above minimum wage ensures I don't have a lot of money to blow on stuffing my face in restaurants or piling on the pounds on regular nights out or holidays abroad.

If do get a blue light card for some discounts though so there's another perk.

Cotswoldbee · 05/10/2023 11:02

When I was working (retired now) it was an almost constant stream of contractors taking us out for lunch, evening meals, theatre, Christmas gifts etc in the hope to secure a contract. This was just as a team member, our bosses got overseas trips as well.
Private sector.

TotalOverhaul · 05/10/2023 11:09

I have to attend some obligatory fancy dinners, which I get paid to be at. They are always good fun as they always seat colleagues who get on next to each other, so we just have a good old catch up and a glass of wine. I said to DH the other day: that's another £75 earned for eating by candlelight. Not often but it does feel lovely when it happens.

Ariela · 05/10/2023 11:11

We get random freebies from suppliers, which we tend to share out. I think the best one recently was the really good 'branded' LED rechargeable torches, they're fab now the darker evenings are coming in. Have far too many pens and calendars at Christmas, but the boxes of chocolates are great.

Rebootnecessary · 05/10/2023 11:12

I get a flu jab every year and occasionally an ice cream in the summer. I do remember the tea trolley in my first job in about 1986 - that was great!

Dh used to get corporate days out at sporting events - Test match, 6 nations rugby, Royal Ascot etc. which often included me. We were taken on a weekend trip to Portugal many years ago. He also used to get a lot of Christmas hampers!

MissAmbrosia · 05/10/2023 11:39

Flu jab, free fruit, drinks and coffee etc. Free public transport pass. Eco-cheques (about 500 euros a year) that can be spent on train tickets, plants, eco-appliances etc. Lunch voucher card for about 150 euros a month - Dd has this with her at Uni to buy food. I'm 55 this year and now get 20 hours extra leave which I can use in blocks of 2 or 4 hours. Have been using over the summer to finish early when the weather is nice. I call it my Nana Nap Leave 😂Used to get loads of supplier gifts and hospitality back in the day - Royal Ascot, Football/Rugby days, did an excellent rally driving day once - but that is all frowned upon these days.

loislovesstewie · 05/10/2023 11:42

None. I worked in the public sector and was not permitted to accept freebies, as it could be thought of as a bribe.

“Unexpected frozen turkey” sounds like it be a great username 😂
