What to eat in the days before surgery

I’m going in for surgery later on this week, does anyone have any tips on the best things to be eating in the run up so I’m not starving?

For context I’ve got low blood sugar and get awful shakes and migraines if I’ve not eaten for a couple of hours, and I can’t function without breakfast 😅 need to stop eating at 12 midnight the night before.

the standard fasting rules are 6hours for food, 2 hours for clear fluid. Nil by mouth from midnight makes no sense at all (never did) and is just laziness on behalf of the person who said it - drives me nuts that people still say it. (The exception might be for a bowel procedure where special prep is required, but that usually lasts longer than from midnight). Clear fluid includes dilute squash, so you could have that (the sugared up version not sugar free) up to 2 hours pre-op (where I am that’d be 6am for a morning list and ~11am for an afternoon). You can also ask the anaesthetist if it’s possible to have more if you’re not first on the list.

I didn’t know any of this - thank you! I’m going to have to follow their rules though because I won’t get a chance to speak to anyone before I’m admitted. Didn’t realise squash counted as clear liquid! I wasn’t told clear liquid though, I was told water only. I wonder if it’s because it’s surgery on my neck? (Thyroidectomy)

I'd buy some electrolyte powder, it will help keep you hydrated properly and minimise migraine occurance.
Beef or chicken bone broth and food with a mix of soluble and non soluble fiber, kiefer and proper Greek yogurt for pro and pri biotics to protect your gut.
When you have a GA your digestive system can slow right down and take a few days to get back to normal risking constipation on a level that can be distressing.
Good luck.
