Accidentally took too many, please advise!

I took x2 200mg ibuprofen around 8.30pm tonight when I was out. I haven’t been feeling great so when I got home, I took another 2 without thinking. This was around 10.30pm, so only 2 hours later. It clicked with me around 30 seconds later and I panicked and ran to the bathroom straight away to try and make myself vomit to bring them back up. TMI but I have an almost non existent gag reflex so this was difficult and I now have a really sore throat, however they didn’t come back up. All I was bringing up was the squash I had been drinking. I kept trying for around 30-40 mins but just mucus and squash.

I’m now really scared about the possible side effects. My DH thinks I’m overreacting and that I’ll be fine because when he’s googling it says you can take higher doses. Most things I’m reading about higher doses or accidentally taking too many are regarding slow release tablets. These were just standard over the counter ones.

I already suffer from anxiety and this is making me terrified with overthinking. Has anyone any experience of this? Thanks in advance

Prescribed ibuprofen is exactly the same as OTC. It’s just the coating on them that make them extended release.

I take 800mg for plantar fasciitis. I just take a medication with them to protect my stomach.

You will be fine. I took far too many ibuprofen a few years ago when I had awful toothache and it took a few days to feel any ill affects and even then it was just feeling sick.

Deep down you know it wasn't dangerous. If you really thought you'd taken an overdose and were at risk, you'd have called for medical help, not fannied around trying to be sick.

So you also know this was an anxiety attack, not a physical medical issue, and I'm not minimising it by saying that. It must be hell to have anxiety that badly. This is your real issue. Are you under any treatment for it?

You are over-reacting.
This is a non-issue.
You will be fine.

So you took 800mg? I did that accidentally once as a teenager. I took 2 400mg tablets thinking they were 200mg. I was absolutely fine.

This is literally a non event and you are being ridiculous.

You can take many more ibuprofen than that safely. Paracetamol is dangerous for overdose, ibuprofen has a much higher threshold. Just leave it longer before your next dose.

I was prescribed 600mg ibuprofen plus codeine (can’t remember what the codeine dose was - might’ve been 60mg) for an injury. Took that 4 times a day for ages with no issues.

One additional dose too close together will only possibly give you a slightly irritated stomach if you are sensitive to it (I’m not, DH is). It won’t do you any harm whatsover.

Obviously don’t make a habit of it, but next time take paracetamol in between ibuprofen doses instead. That’s also perfectly safe to
do.

I don't think it's ridiculous to double check if there will be any consequences. OP isn't hysterically flapping and over reacting, they're asking a question. It's this sort of attitude that stops people from going to their doctor with genuine problems, people should be allowed to simply ask questions about their health without fear of ridicule.

OP, I would also be a little worried and ask the question in your shoes, it's not ridiculous as most people don't know that the max dose is much higher than the packet says. It sounds like it isn't a big deal but you were right to query it.

@InterFactual - OP describes themselves as panicking and being terrified and spending over half an hour trying to vomit until their throat was really sore throat.

Sounds like hysterical flapping and overreacting to me.
