Anyone throwing out a lot of fruit/veg?

I used to shop at Tesco. Switched to Aldi as we were fed up of food not lasting and needing binned. Just the same problem with Aldi

Anyone else noticed this?

Not sure what to do about it really. Annoyed at the waste (although my compost heap is well fed) and pissed off at the waste of money.

I've noticed bananas and raspberries are going off very quickly. Despite washing the raspberries and storing them in a proper fruit container, they are mouldy after a few days. I'm not buying them any more for now. I can't afford to throw them away.

Bananas I just buy less of now, once they are gone I'll buy more, but all of us eat one a day pretty much so I seem to be buying them every other day 😂

You shouldn't wash raspberries until you want to eat them because they go off quicker when washed. Saying that I never wash supermarket raspberries. Only the ones out of my mums garden get a wash cos their full of bugs.

Take it back for a refund. I’m always taking stuff back that’s gone mouldy/manky etc within a couple of days. Stores just refund, no problem, they must be getting lots of returns now they don’t have sell/use by dates on the,.

Will be interesting to see what the supermarkets do regarding increased refunds. If they do notice a big spike in them.

Probably won't bother them, after all, they'd have been throwing out the out of date fruit and veg anyway under the old use/sell by system, so if anything, it probably saves them in terms of waste disposal costs. There's always going to be "wastage" and loss when you sell a fresh food product, so refunds/disposal will be baked into their pricings.

Yes and then we switched to Ocado. The only thing we don't get more than a week out of is bananas but they do last a week.

I've noticed that since 'best before' dates were done away with a lot of fruit and veg (particularly veg) is already past it best when I buy it. Things like onions and potatoes are the worst, I find.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/10/2023 12:47

No. Put veg in soup, fruit in a crumble and freeze.

PictureFrameWindow · 04/10/2023 12:52

Isn't it aBrexit thing since the veg sits for longer before reaching the consumer?

Anyway, maybe you could switch to frozen veg for the last two days before a big shop?

Ditto frozen fruit like raspberries is great.

Ours are pretty good actually, except mushrooms. They seem to be past their best in a day or two after delivery, but everything else keeps for ages. I shop between Asda delivery, Aldi and occasionally Tesco. All of them are pretty good now but several years ago stuff from Asda didn’t last at all. I think it depends on which distribution warehouse they start off from these days

Do you repackage mushrooms into paper bags? Last much longer that way.

Boujibroke · 04/10/2023 15:18

That's a good point @user1497207191 forgot that they would have done there sums.

@DelilahBucket glad you found a solution to the issue.

That's what I find @cheezncrackers I do look, feel etc before I buy items.

Thanks @MrsSkylerWhite

@PictureFrameWindow not sure on transport times or if Brexit has made a difference.

Not masses as I try to check for the freshest produce and if we have home delivery I am not scared to send stuff back but yes its certainly a thing due to the no best before dates. DP picked up some tender stem broccoli at the weekend and when we went to eat it it was partially rotten. Rotten potatoes, salad leaf, mouldy cherry tomatoes, slimy mushrooms. I understand what supermarkets mean about food waste and best before dates but seems more like an excuse for retailers to sell us rotten food, everyone needs to check produce and leave the mouldering produce and take or send back stuff that has gone off and complain otherwise they will just keep reducing standards for consumers.

Lavender14 · 04/10/2023 15:39

We chop and freeze fruit and veg that it's looking like we won't get using in time and store ready to cook/ use in a smoothie in a tupperware in the freezer. We also buy a lot of frozen veg since it's nutritionally sound and lasts ages.
