Anyone own an electric drumkit?

SecondUsername4me · 03/10/2023 16:05

(Name changed as friends and family know I'm shopping for one and don't want my other threads in their hands!)

Ds would like a drumkit for his birthday, and because we are in a terrace I think the best bet is an electric one with headphones.

They seem to range in price from £150 up to (a clearly fucking mental) £1,000. He is a complete novice so no need to go wild, but I was looking for recommendations from anyone that has one, thanks.

It sounds really good

I don’t have an e-kit but I do play drums, the most popular and highly regarded kits imo are from Roland. They have a good reputation for reliability and also importantly: resale value, it’s the brand most people will look for first. This would be my recommendation in that sort of price range, seems to come with everything you need, stool, kick pedal etc, and btw you can spend an awful lot more than £1k!

My ds is 8 and this is something he fancies getting jnto as a hobby, so whilst in time I might go more expensive, I'm definetly looking to spend as little as possible. The 600pound one is way more than I will be able to spend.

Fair enough. The Alesis nitro seems to get good reviews, has proper mesh heads (realistic stick feel) and is around £350 I believe.

Gear4music is a great shop, just check you have enough space as they can take up a fair amount of room.

Roland 1 are a great started electric kit, and you can usually pick them up 2nd hand in great condition!

worth noting that even though they come with headphones they are still noisy!

We bought ours secondhand from FB in the end, as DS is only just starting drum lessons. I think we paid £75 for it. It's an ALESIS DMLITE. No idea if it's any good or not but it is perfectly fine for home practise and DS can plug headphones in. I was not inclined to spend hundreds on an instrument that could be ditched in a year if he doesn't take to it!

Another vote for Alessis with the mesh heads. Remember you'll need headphones and/or and amp as well to be able to hear it. My DS found the drum seat made a lot of difference so make sure to get a good one.

I got my son the Alexis Nitro set (& the expansion kit) - it's cheaper on Amazon.

It takes up a LOT of space, comes without an amp or headphones, so you'll need to add those on & a carrier bag worth of leads to connect.
You also need a stool.
In theory it's moveable, in practice it's too much hassle & the foot pedals are not something you want to stub your toe on.

The boxes it comes in are ridiculously big & you have to assemble it yourself.

He changed his mind & it's sat unused for most of the year, so I ended up buying a cover as they are dust traps if not used regularly.
Not silent in use even with nothing plugged into them but not bad.
Drumheads are pretty small compared to a real drumset so I think it would be a bit of leap from real to these if he is getting lessons elsewhere.
Might be worth asking a drum teacher if he has one.

Sounds not bad at all, but if he doesn't use it you'll regret it unless he has a massive room.

I expect if you look around, you'll find plenty of people who also end up like me - I'll get round to getting rid of it eventually & it will have barely been used then just sat around for ages getting in the way.
I'd check on second hand sites local to you before looking at buying new.

Alessi mesh from gear4music here too.

As above, it's not silent, even with headphones on.

Gets daily use here, but I also see lots of kits up for sale second hand, if that's thexway you'd consider going
