Would running alcohol work on a hard shell case?

Mytholmroyd · 08/10/2023 16:54

Rubbing! Damn autocorrect! 😂

Luuucccc · 08/10/2023 19:45

You could try that but I think it only kills them on direct contact, may work to repel but not sure. I think tea tree oil repels them. You should be ok with a hard shell one as bed bugs tend to stay on fabric. You can get plastic suitcase covers/protectors on Amazon also and keep them in the bath

I’m going to London next week and I will not be sitting down on the tube!

Luuucccc · 08/10/2023 19:52

Just looked it up @Mytholmroyd rubbing alcohol will help to repel them.

They hate the smell of alcohol and using it is an effective solution to your problem. The rubbing alcohol can dry out bed bugs bodies, which can eventually lead to their death. Using this scent is good for your property because the odor that rubbing alcohol releases prevent the pest from laying eggs in your area. When they smell it, they will get out of your home to look for another place to give birth. By spraying the rubbing alcohol, almost half of the bed bug’s population can be eliminated.

Thanks @Luuucccc fortunately I don't have them in the house but might use that to clean hard shell cases before bringing them back in the house. And maybe put a spray bottle in my case for UK trips - I know I can't take it on a plane.

Rubbing alcohol works but a bug expert has said it's also highly flammable so not to throw it on beds etc.

royalwatchewr · 10/10/2023 16:09

I've read they are resistant to many traditional sprays and that the Olympics next year could trigger international outbreaks, a bit like the Spanish Flu after WW1.

Horrid thought!

The rugby world cup is on in Paris at the moment. If they're going to spread, now is the time they'll spread.

Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. It evaporates almost instantly leaving completely nothing. Also as PP noted, it's highly flammable.

We got bed bugs just before covid. This is the stuff that finally did for them:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/ROCKWELL-CXID032-CimeXa-Insecticide-Rockwell/dp/B0085HRWI8

It works in a similar way to diatomaceous earth but is much more effective and also safer if you inhale any.

It stays active indefinitiely - i.e. until you hoover it up, so you can pre-treat your beds (watch a few YT videos on how to apply, you only need the lightest of dustings). That way if you have the misfortune of bringing anything home, it'll be dead within a few days.
