The Filofax. Remember them?

Lovely. Part of the non-tech rennaissance and environmentally better than buying a diary etc every year

Petrol stored in soft drinks bottles, found some in my nan's shed, aged 11 and took a mighty swig, it was perverted.

What’s with all the random threads asking random questions?😂

I think they're fun and interesting.

In fairness you should have asked before drinking your granny's carefully prepared petrol bombs.

Police rocking up at the house . A massive show up in front of the neighbour's. Not any more , in some places it's actually a badge of honour.

Getting pregnant outside of marriage.

Nutella (it wasn't sold in the UK when I was a child so we only ever had it while on holiday in France...it was practically the highlight of the holiday and my mum used to bring the jars home to use as glasses)

Forgetting to set the VCR to record your favourite programme if you were going to be out. If you didn't record it, that was it - no catch-up!

Australian soaps (Neighbours, Home & Away) - everybody I knew watched them and each episode was earnestly discuussed at school the next day. Because the whole country watched the same episode on the same day, it was a unifying force, a national obsession, in a way that TV isn't now. Same with the The Thornbirds.

Every Wednesday afternoon. All shops shut.

Death from ecstasy overdose, hardly hear it mentioned these days

I work in the entertainment industry overseas and people are always shocked to find out I have never done any drugs. I always maintain it’s because I was the exact generation in the U.K. who were young teens when Leah Betts died, and as such, a lot of people I knew as a teen didn’t ever tried drugs and still haven’t.

UndercoverCop · 03/10/2023 11:25

@Regularoldme same as me, I can still see that image of Leah betts so clearly, I was 11 and it had a huge impact

Being told not to put too much butter on my bread. Not for health reasons - that science was way in the future - but economy. Now several times a week I have it slathered on toast.

piscofrisco · 03/10/2023 12:20

The danger of Falling off pylons.
Heroin chic. People used to go bananas about that and the influence it was having on young girls. It seems benign now compared to some of the stuff that's out there.

The Word and TFI Friday. We would actually talk about who was going to be on it on Fridays and then talk about it on Mondays!

Leah Betts? I had to watch something on her at school in a ‘special lesson’ as it had just happened. Also, I LOVED East 17 as a child and my nan banned me from listening to them after Brian Harvey told the papers he ‘loved taking E’ 🙈

piscofrisco · 03/10/2023 12:25

Head bags for school. Does that brand even exist anymore?
Swatch watches.

piscofrisco · 03/10/2023 12:27

I was Also very impacted by Leah Betts. And I have also never done drugs, not totally as a result but that was deffo part of it.

For me it wasn't the Russians that were the scariest. It was the Libyans.
