Change in periods…?

Thirtysomething30 · 02/10/2023 22:14

My periods have always been pretty regular, every 28 days or so and they last about 4 days.

However, in the last few months I’ve noticed some changes, mainly with my cycle length.

In August, my period was a day early. Same happened in September.

And then yesterday my period started 4 days early. It wasn’t due until Thursday. This never happens to me and normally if it doesn’t start when it’s due, it is because it’s late due to stress.

I am also noticing too that there’s a bit of a change with my flow.

I am early 30s. Is this normal? Or is a change in menstrual cycle something to discuss with a GP?

Could be perimenopause. I am 45 and the last few years my cycle has got shorter and my flow changed.

MeinKraft · 02/10/2023 23:51

I'm in my late 30s and my periods are somewhat erratic at times too, the most recent was a week late for no reason. I think it's a very slow start to peri menopause.

I'm 45 and my always 28 day cycle has dropped to 27 days last two months.

You are much younger though.

Keep an eye on it next few months and see Dr if continues?

So you know what age your mum haf menopause?

Unlikely to be that at your age, more likely to be one of those things and be back to normal soon

Could be thyroid related. Have you had bloods done lately? My thyroid went awol a few years ago and really messed with my cycle. I went from having a regular, 28 day cycle with light flow to a 23-24 day cycle and very, very heavy flow.

Thirtysomething30 · 03/10/2023 10:52

@pacificoceanwhale interestingly I did a private blood test to check for thyroid a few weeks ago (as had other symptoms) and the results came back in the normal range (just though). Maybe I should follow up with my GP…

@Thirtysomething30 yes it's worth the follow up. See if you can get a referral for an ultrasound while you're at it. Mine were so bad that I was convinced I had fibroids or the likes but ultrasound (internal) was all clear. It's been put down to under active thyroid (I have alot of other symptoms so it makes sense)

I'm early 40s and mine have gone to anything like about 21 days to 35 days (I've always been like clockwork 28 day cycles) and periods only last 2 days (but very heavy). I assume it's perimenopause, but I agree, you are still quite young for that.

Tarsandcase · 03/10/2023 13:38

Last year I was having periods that were all over the place (and really heavy) and eventually a cyst was found on one of my ovaries. I'm pretty sure I felt it burst one evening (a sudden sharp pain that lasted about 5 seconds and it wasn't there on the next scan) and things went back to normal after.

That's interesting, I've ordered a home thyroid test now, thanks

My period is definitely changing. It used to be 3-4 days with a bit of v v light bleeding after but this wouldn’t bother me.

My period should have finished yesterday, which it did. But this morning it’s come back, really quite heavy again and totally unexpected. Urgh. Time to speak to the GP I think.

Have a look at the research between menstruation and the covid vaccine.

Thirtysomething30 · 05/10/2023 11:39

@Newtrix oh yeah I will. I had the Oxford one even though I wasn’t supposed to (as under 40), but I got it early before the guidance came out…
