Youtube 'prankster' shot whilst trying to film someone

I'm amazed things like this don't happen more often considering how many people make these kinds of videos winding up random members of the public. Obviously nobody should be shot, but if you think it's funny trying to get a rise out of someone for a video then surely you should understand that one day you may do it to the wrong person

The guy asked him to stop 3 times and tried to push his phone away but he shoved it back in his face again

(sorry for the DM link, it's the only article I could find that didn't have a paywall)

Moment YouTube prankster Tanner Cook's stunt goes badly wrong

Video shows Tanner Cook, 21, who runs the Classified Goons YouTube channel, harassing Alan Colie as he picked up a food order at the Dulles Town Center mall in Sterling, Virginia , on April 2.

The jury got this right and I'm another person surprised that this doesn't happen more often. The accused should get a cut of the money made through that video or YT should prevent it being monetized.
In jail since April too- poor guy. Shame that the system can't sort things out more quickly.

ohsuzannah · 02/10/2023 13:45

Fucking men acting like 6 year olds in the playground 😡
I hope the delivery driver gets off,Cook deserved what he got. What's the betting Cook will get out of hospital and go straight back out to do it again 🤬

readbooksdrinktea · 02/10/2023 13:49

Fuck around and find out. Maybe he'll learn to leave people the hell alone now.

Serves the perpetrator right. The victim was harassed and scared, and the message being played in his face sounded like it had sexual overtones. He told the perpetrator to leave him alone 3x, and when the threatening and confusing behaviour continued he defended himself with a weapon he was legally allowed to carry.

Basically you can’t just harass people in the street and expect to get away with it. You don’t know what someone else’s mental state is. They could be autistic or have other mental difficulties that they’re struggling with, they could have experienced trauma or sexual abuse in the past and be triggered, they could be veterans with PTSD, there are many reasons why they might react badly. If a strange man approached me with his phone repeating a sexual phrase and refused to leave me alone, I would very likely attack him out of fear.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/10/2023 14:05

I’m not sure which bit of the article angered me more to be honest.

The prick who is messing about, harassing someone and pushing his phone in someone’s face despite being told 3 times not to.

The guy when encountering this harassment his first instinct was to shoot.

Like you yourself wrote, his first instinct wasn't to shoot. He was trying to walk away from this arsehole, he told him three times to stop, and he then tried to knock the phone away after it had been repeatedly shoved in his face. Shooting him was clearly not his "first instinct."

Finteq · 02/10/2023 14:14

He was an idiot.

Let's hope he's learnt from it,otherwise it might be worse next time.

The epitome of entitlement. And stupidity.

Delivery guy who was going about his day has been in jail since April.

He should sue the idiot

Flickersy · 02/10/2023 14:18

No-one comes off well here.

The prankster is a complete twat.

It's wrong to shoot people who aren't presenting any real threat.

I would have been really scared.

A 6 foot man chasing you, with sexual phrases on his phone. Obviously not listening when you've told them to stop it. Following you,and you don't know if they're mentally unstable or have got mental issues.

I don't think you can say for sure whether he was posing a threat or not. And you've got to remember in the USA people carry guns, so the guy didn't know if the pranking shite was also armed or not. And his whole demeanor is weird when he is following the guy.

If you met someone like that it is a threat.

So what happens when someone decides you are scary and presenting a "real threat" to them - even if you're not - and shoots you?

You don't have to be a twat prankster. You could be delivering leaflets and walking on someone's property. You could get into a minor altercation on the road or in the queue at a supermarket. Maybe they think you might have a knife or a gun or mental health issues.

The bottom line is that it's wrong to shoot people who aren't presenting any actual danger to you.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/10/2023 14:28

I hate americas gun laws, they're insane. But my god, I think I'd have shot the little twat too.

I can see how it would have been quite scary - it makes no sense, what they were doing, so then you start worrying you're missing something / it's a distraction for a robbery or something.

He's not the first one either, I don't think. Wasn't there some complete wanker filming himself putting buckets on people's heads in a DIY type store that got shot?

He had plenty of warning.

The guy said stop twice.
Tried to get the phone out of his hand and even walked away.

I don't feel sorry for him and think he deserved what happened to him. Even now he is cashing in the outcome of the trial.

He's a little dipshit that lucky he's still alive. And he should be sued to within a inch of his life.

That doesn't change the fact that it's wrong to shoot people who aren't a real threat to you. Death or grievous bodily harm isn't the punishment for being a bellend.

JaneJeffer · 02/10/2023 14:36

OhComeOnFFS · 02/10/2023 13:12

This is why I should never be allowed to have a gun - I can't count the number of people I would have shot by now!

One probably because you'd be in jail

SerendipityJane · 02/10/2023 14:36

Yeah, well ... "proportionate" in a nice warm safe courtroom looks completely different to proportionate in the dark when you are scared to death and you have children or other vulnerable family members to protect.

Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Well that depends doesn’t it. If she gets caught 😂

It was the fuck about of times, it was the find out of times.

Brilliant! Dickens would be proud of you.

Also hear hear to the poster who said imagine a big black or Mexican guy in Virginia harassing people in this way.

They just wouldn’t dare.

The entitlement.

LakeTiticaca · 02/10/2023 15:00

That's one way to fix stupid.
Next annoying brainless moron might not be so lucky 😉

Yeah? That’s what you would have thought if a random 6ft4 man came up with this sexualised message playing on his phone, is it?

No sure why another bloke should be less worried. We have no idea of his personal struggles.

readbooksdrinktea · 02/10/2023 15:06

Who are you to determine whom people determine to be a threat to them?

The guy asked him repeatedly to stop.

Awaywiththewhisk · 02/10/2023 15:10

I was trying to think what I’d do if this happened to me. If it was indoors I think I’d crouch down in the foetal position with hands wrapped around the top of my head and start keening loudly. That might attract security, stop me from being filmed and the fuckers (he wasn’t on his own don’t forget) might be so weirded out they might just piss off. Might.

It’s easy to speculate from the comfort of my armchair though.

Poor delivery guy. Let’s face it’s an awful job. Low status, high pressure and pays little. And he’s not even allowed to shuffle around minding his own business. He has to run the gauntlet of tests like this whilst doing his job. I feel really sorry for him.

Hopefully the perpetrator’s medical bills will be ruinous.

Awaywiththewhisk · 02/10/2023 15:11

tests = twits

EmmaEmerald · 02/10/2023 15:12

"You could be delivering leaflets and walking on someone's property"

not remotely a valid comparison to what happened here

very glad the chap was acquitted but his harasser should have to pay compensation

I also hope the medical bills will be ruinous and he has to pay the poor delivery driver compensation. Although if you watch the video a PP posted of his reaction after the verdict was announced it looks like his mum thinks he's just an adorable little joker and I'll bet mum and dad would sort it all out for him... he (and his parents) all sound like complete morons.
