Is the Christmas stuff in shops earlier this year??!

I swear it is.

Went to The Range yesterday to look for Halloween bits and honestly the store was over 50% Christmas stuff. It seemed really over the top considering it was still September yesterday.

Their halloween section was TINY and mostly shite.

Is it just me?

Home bargains started mid summer holidays. It's ridiculous.

BoohooWoohoo · 01/10/2023 19:13

I think it makes sense since people on a budget might want to start earlier this year.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/10/2023 19:14

Nope used to seeing Christmas stuff appearing in August tbh!

No.

I keep a lookout for the first Christmas stuff I spot in the shops as me and my adult kids have a competition to eat the earliest mince pie of the year.

The earliest I've found was august.

This year at least in the shops around me it was mid sept.

SecretShambles · 01/10/2023 19:16

Yes. I saw 'its never too early!' Signs in Asda alongside the Christmas stuff.

Yes. Its far too early Asda

Rantypanties · 01/10/2023 19:21

I noticed that and wondered if it is because there’s less stock available this year? There’s not as much range in the Halloween sections for sure.

ShowOfHands · 01/10/2023 19:24

Nope. It always appears end of August, ramps up in September and then is widespread in October.

There's a thread every year claiming it's earlier than ever. Usually end of Sept/beg of Oct!

I worked in retail 25yrs ago and it was the same then.

Hibernatalie · 01/10/2023 19:28

Last year I was actively looking for Christmas stuff in October and couldn't find anything really so I think you're right it's earlier this year.

parameciumparty · 01/10/2023 19:28

There's been Christmas stuff in the shops for the past month. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Lorrymum · 01/10/2023 19:34

Markies has had Christmas puds, cakes, chocolates for a few weeks. I bought a cake and shoved it to the back of a cupboard. I apologised to the shop assistant while I was paying for it!

BrownTableMat · 01/10/2023 19:36

Yup. Lidl had its Christmas aisle out when I was there a week ago. Late September, for heaven’s sake!

SecretShambles · 01/10/2023 19:38

I like the PPs 'earliest mince pie' competition

ButteryNuts · 01/10/2023 19:39

I had a facebook memory from 13 years ago pop up today commenting on Christmas things being in shops, so no, not new!

I never get this kind of logic. You'll have the same budget whether you spend it in October or save it for Christmas, presumably?

DrMarshaFieldstone · 01/10/2023 19:40

Not especially. John Lewis open their Christmas section from the beginning of October every year.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/10/2023 19:42

I used to get the Boots gift guide, was the highlight of the season! That used to be mid September.

I always find it bemusing that some people don't expect it to be in shops until December. I'm never sure where they think the stock will be kept.

BlackcatsAndPumpkins · 01/10/2023 19:44

If you get paid monthly , it's not many pay cheques until xmas, also if it didn't sell, shops wouldn't put it out so early. I work in a shop and every single year come Xmas Eve people are moaning because nothing left, same with advent calenders, buy them early because they sell out as soon a they go on sale.
Shops can't win, if they left it until last minute people would also complain.

LethalToddlerElbows · 01/10/2023 19:46

It's strange because I remember seeing Halloween displays a month or so ago and thinking ahh it's too soon but I will want to buy some bits. And now they are mostly all gone before October has even begun, been replaced with Christmas stuff and I (most people?!) hadn't even started to think about Halloween yet.

The supermarkets have brought out their food range earlier this year, to allow folk to budget, save and plan, to help with the cost of living

Alighttouchonthetiller · 01/10/2023 19:57

I like it. I don't have to buy any of it and it's cheerful. I absolutely get that some people need to spread the cost, but lots of people just really like getting ready for Christmas. I don't consider myself to be a massive Christmas fan, but I did buy some wrapping paper the other day so now I can tick that off the list I haven't even made yet.

LoobyDop · 01/10/2023 19:59

I think it’s pretty normal. I’d usually agree that it’s depressingly early and ridiculous, but we moved house on 22nd December last year and didn’t really have any decorations. I’ve already started planning how I’m doing them this year- it’s pathetic how excited I am.

Nah, you're taking part in a noble tradition. Whinge away. I find it festive!

Our local Sainsbury’s were putting out their Halloween displays today. They have had TONS of Christmas stuff out for a month already 🙄.
