Is there a difference between fingernails and toenails.

Following a very odd, silly conversation with DS2 , if forensic scientists found nail clippings at the scene of a murder, would they be able to tell if they were fingernails or toe nails? Oh, and if they came from identical twins, would they know which twin they came from?

Lets not worry about why there would be nail clippings there and why you would cut your nails having murdered someone!

please tell me we are not the only family who have conversations like this. And I'd love to hear any weirder ones!

I’m no expert, but aren’t toenails thicker? And they’d be longer (i.e. wider clippings) if from the big toe - shorter from, say, the little toe.
Not sure about the DNA aspect!

toenails grow more slowly, so maybe there is a genetic difference?

One set is on your fingers and one set is on your toes😂
That sadly is the level of knowledge I possess on this subject!

Finger nails maybe more likely to look chewed??

They are visibly different, I can identify a clipping. 🕵️‍♀️

I'm pretty sure the genotype of twins is the same, could be wrong.

Yes can tell for adults certainly. Children it’s a bit harder.
