Do you get DC school uniform out for them?

And if so how old are they? If not, when did you stop?

I'm trying to encourage a bit of independence (and less for me to do....) currently they seem incapable of taking the top polo shirt and top jumper out of a drawer.

DS is 3. I take his underwear, trousers and t-shirt out for him but he needs to get his jumper, coat and socks / shoes himself. I hang his clothes so it’s a bit easier than taking them out of the drawer.

Been able to get it out since reception.

Remembering to put it in the wash can be a different matter still (age 10&12).
However DD1 has always had an independent streak and DD2 copied her big sister.

Probably 6 IIRC. Since age 7 has got own breakfast ,(cereal and milk), dressed and brushed teeth with no help apart from sometimes a reminder that it's time to get ready. Does own suncream in summer. We charge the school chrome book and make sure bag is packed.

Other children is in secondary and has been making own packed lunch since the start of year 7.

I get my sons (6) out as he can't reach it. He gets his socks and pants out.

He'd be more than capable of doing it , if he could reach.

Same with normal clothes.

imnotthatkindofmum · 01/10/2023 17:36

No. My youngest is 9. Stopped when she was around 7. Only did it for so long as she's such a slow coach!! Stopped sooner for the older two!

Have four, 9, 11, 13 and 15. Horrendously 13 and 15yo are more likely to ask for help finding clothes (think they were better in primary!) 11yo and 9yo will take them out themselves (if I have them in the wardrobe and not lost in our sea of clothes😅)

theduchessofspork · 01/10/2023 17:40

Getting it themselves from 5

But it was in draws in a way that was logical and easy for them to get to

Fiddlerdragon · 01/10/2023 17:45

I think I did for all mine through the majority of primary. I’ve still got one primary who’s in year 2 now. He’s 100% capable of getting his clothes out, but tbh his schedules all over the place to the point I struggle to keep on top of it myself, so I get everything ready the day before so the mornings aren’t manic. ATM 2 days a week he’s going in in his PE kit, the schools hired a portable full sized pool for a month and he needs his swim stuff 4 days a week, one day after school he’s got forest school so needs wellies and gloves that day, and another day he brings trainers in for after school boccia. So much easier for me to pack and prepare the night before than hunting for goggles at 7am

Hummusanddipdip · 01/10/2023 17:45

I get his stuff out for him and he dresses himself (races dh) he's 4, they're hung too high in his wardrobe for him to get down himself.

Fiddlerdragon · 01/10/2023 17:47

I just realised I only skimmed your thread really. If it’s just a case of grabbing a pair of pants and shirt out the drawer then I’d say 5yo

Bemyclementine · 01/10/2023 18:00

Thanks, good to hear what others do. Dc are 6 and 8 and until recently clothes were not easily accessible for them to get themselves. I'm trying hard! to rectify this!

I'm not sure if the best way forward, I thought folded but they have a proper rummage abd maje a mess. They maybe just need more practice!

My eldest is in uni but my other two are 11 & 7 and I always put their clothes and pyjamas out for them. That said I also put my dh work clothes out for him too 😁

Bookish88 · 01/10/2023 18:49

I still get DS's out for him, he's 4.5 and in Reception, but mainly because they're still too high for him to reach.

He does, however, fully dress himself.
