Sunday daydreaming here....

I would probably get a new, second hand car, start a healthy holiday fund for the future years and spend a chunk on a really good coat/shoes/bag and then... maybe I'd have to be sensible and save/invest.

I could buy a decent apartment nearby with it but think that would be a chain around mu neck long term.

I'd have no mortgage!

Toddlerteaplease · 01/10/2023 17:26

I'd pay my mortgage off. And do a fee bits to the house

mikado1 · 01/10/2023 17:26

Oh yes, sensible 👍 Ours is small enough so yes better pay that off too.

Boomboom22 · 01/10/2023 17:27

Wouldn't pay off all the mortgage but prob put some in there, maybe 100k to halve the payments.
Then a newer car. Emergency savings. Holiday for a few years. All gone.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/10/2023 17:27

Could pay off the mortgage and buy a new car. Would therefore have the cash to put DS through university without needing him to take out loans. Nice dream...

Ibizafun · 01/10/2023 17:29

Would gift to my kids to help with deposit for when mortgage rates come down

DelilahBucket · 01/10/2023 17:30

We could pay off our mortgage but not until our current rate ends as we would earn more interest in a savings account than we are paying. The interest would get us a few nice family holidays and pay for the house to have it's much needed update.

mollythemaid · 01/10/2023 17:30

I'd buy a house. Or at least use it as a deposit for a house.
39 and generation rent

Eastmeetswest1 · 01/10/2023 17:31

I would splurge on taking the family to Lapland - to a lodge where the snow was proper snow (not wet) and just enjoy having their company - with sledding, snow- mobiling, husky rides etc. No idea how much it would cost but I can but dream. 😀

Thefacethatlaunchedathousandchips · 01/10/2023 17:31

We'd be boring and just pay off the mortgage I think. Or I might stop working while I look for a new job (I hate mine and am desperately searching for a new one)!

Beignet · 01/10/2023 17:35

I would take early retirement. I have paid the mortgage off already and I would get a part time job doing something I love (rather than my high stress senior manager role). I'd use that money to prop my wages up until I properly retire.

Spendonsend · 01/10/2023 17:35

I'd stick 50k in a pension I can access from 60 as i have a shortfall due to part time work. I think id chill a bit more about the future then.

Id pay off 50k of mortgage and just keep paying the rest.

We'd all go on a holiday to somwhere like the grand canyon.

Then we'd get a small electric car.

mikado1 · 01/10/2023 17:36

Great ideas. Most of us would be reasonably sensible so, but it would definitely change quality of life.

Mortgage free so would probably split the 50 between the children and the rest in pention pot/investments.

CulturallyAppropriatedName · 01/10/2023 17:41

I actually have 450k in the bank. 75 in savings and 390 in investments.

Doesn't change anything day to say somehow, though we did pay off the mortgage. With kids at uni and living off our wages, (I earn 30k, DH earns 80k) it all still feels the same as ever. I don't feel rich at all; but I do have the great privilege of not especially worrying about money either.

friedplantain2023 · 01/10/2023 17:48

You shouldn't have more than£80000 in your bank account as its not insured if the bank collapses

skewwiff · 01/10/2023 17:53

I have 150k in the bank (inheritence). We'll use it to pay off the mortgage next year when we get to the end of our fixed rate deal. In the meantime, 50k of it is in a high interest savings account and the other 100k of it is in premium bonds, which means I can dream about winning a £million. 😁

Loft conversion with desperate needed extra bathroom.
Money for new car safety net

975zyx · 01/10/2023 17:55

Pay off the mortgage, have a major holiday, not have to worry about university costs.

bringonyourwreckingball · 01/10/2023 17:56

I could buy STBXH out of the house completely and never have to deal with the absolute cockwomble again which would improve my mental health no end

Multipleexclamationmarks · 01/10/2023 17:58

50 grand would pay off the mortgage and buy me a little runabout car. Most of the rest I'd invest for retirement.

mumda · 01/10/2023 17:59

It would remove the need to deal with a problem right now. Which would be blissful.

GoodlifeGlow · 01/10/2023 18:00

We have this sat in premium bonds, it’s almost like it doesn’t exist, haven’t paid off the mortgage (on a very low rate), no extravagant holidays. We live off our salaries day to day. In 3 years we will use half to pay off the mortgage and probably buy a new car. It’s like a very nice financial security blanket atm.
