DS will be two in a few months and I’m thinking about a scooter (or a tricycle -
not sure.) What do you wish you had known when you bought one? Do I get one of these two-in-one scooter things so it’s more long-lasting? Or do you just get any cheapo one because they’re all the same? This feels like a whole minefield I wasn’t ready for 😂

Hi Mumsnetters,
We know this thread is a little old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for scooter options, be sure to check out our best scooters for kids guide where we feature the Micro Deluxe Scooter and the Trunki Folding 3 Wheel Kids Scooter for Boys and Girls plus loads more for children of all ages.

We hope this helps

Micro scooters are the best ones. They come with a seat attachment for when they are tiny. Built like tanks!

EarthlyNightshade · 01/10/2023 15:19

Micro scooter.
Three wheeled scooter should be fine for a two year old. They can travel for miles on them.

MissRainbowBrite · 01/10/2023 15:32

Micro Scooter. They are miles better than any others, you won't regret it.
They're light, easy to carry, very easy for toddlers to push, they glide along beautifully and are well made.

NeedTheSeaside · 01/10/2023 15:37

Another 'micro scooter' vote!!

they're definitely NOT all the same. You need one they can 'steer'comfortably & has decent rubber wheels, not cheap plastic!

find a park with a good path or play area (unless you have a gated, safe, flat, smooth, area at home)

they might take to it immediately, it might be a slow burn!

but enjoy 😊

Yourebeingtooloud · 01/10/2023 15:38

Definitely micro scooter all the way for little ones.

3Tunes · 01/10/2023 15:40

Micro scooter.

Or prioritise cycling and get a balance bike, then a bike. By the time they’ve mastered that you can get the metal 5 to adult scooter and it’s lasts forever. This one:

Don't give them a scooter until you've got them on a balance bike and they know they can do it. They can refuse to go on the bike as the scooter is easier. 10" balance bike for littlies.

Micromini scooters were the thing for us. Micro mini. Maxi micro and the Life Ryder here.

dayofcheese · 01/10/2023 15:41

The trunki one is good

3Tunes · 01/10/2023 15:42

X posted! But yes, it’s hard to get them on a bike when a scooter is so much easier. So I didn’t offer the scooter until
they could ride a bike, which was quite young as they had a balance bike from age 2, and so they picked up pedalling really quickly.

Kinsters · 01/10/2023 15:44

Another vote for micro scooter! DD borrowed the neighbours scooter one day because we left hers in DH's car. She fell off it so many times as it just didn't handle as well as her micro scooter.

AmyandPhilipfan · 01/10/2023 15:44

I would try them on a friend's or in a shop where you can try them out first. My daughter was a whizz on a balance bike at two and a half but she really couldn't get to grips with a scooter until she was about 5. Now at 6 she loves her scooter and can pedal a bike without stabilisers, but a scooter at 2 would have been a waste of money for her.

sellotape12 · 01/10/2023 17:35

That’s really interesting and lots of people have said a similar thing. I really have no idea so very happy to be open to everyone else’s wisdom. In my head bikes were a thing that you’ve got kids when they were like five, but this is my 80’s brain talking. Maybe I need to ask you guys for a recommendation on balance bikes now!

Mini micro scooter 100% no other compares!

Bambooshoot · 01/10/2023 17:46

We had a balance bike but my son was never interested - he loved his scooter though! My thoughts would be to get one with light up wheels so you can spot them in the evenings, do not underestimate how fast they can get away from you and how useful this is! Also, adjustable height handlebars so it will last a good few years. Amazon have loads!

EarthlyNightshade · 01/10/2023 17:49

Neither of my kids would use a balance bike but they both learnt to ride a bike at 5 after much use of micro scooters so it didn't hold them back.
They are teenagers now and not quite ready to get rid of a maxi micro scooter!

Ihaveawonderfulpartner · 01/10/2023 18:37

My boys loved their micro scooters. They started with the three wheeler and then had the two wheeler. They had balance bikes as well but the scooters were their preferred mode of transport ☺️

Philandbill · 01/10/2023 18:40

We had a micro scooter, it was very sturdy and both my DC and then their cousin used it a lot. I think SIL has passed it on to another family so may still be going strong.

LaundryWoes · 01/10/2023 18:49

Definitely get a decent brand, DC1 had a £30 one from smyths, never really took to scooting. Handed it down to DC2, they also didn’t use it much. Then I decided to get new scooters, looked at what everyone in the school playground was using and got Globber ones. Both DC happily scoot to school now.
