Hello all

Bed change x 3 last night

Keep missing the sick bucket

Tips please?
Washing in a basin then washing machine?

Fabreze for all the teddies?

Also keep off for a day or two after they recover just to be on safe side?

Never had it to this extent before just checking if there are any tips please

And yes I could google but the wisest people I know live here so please go easy xxxxxx

Towels everywhere and you can just throw them in the washing. Teddies I’d throw straight in the washing machine.

Clean and bleach everywhere.

Keep them off 48 hours after the last vomit.

Big glass of something for you.

AmyandPhilipfan · 01/10/2023 10:41

Well if it follows the pattern of all the sick bugs my daughter has had, expect to go down with it yourself in 2-5 days but hopefully your children will be better by then.

I wouldn't worry about prewashing. Washing machines cope quite well with vomit and presumably if they've been sick a few times there shouldn't be much coming up by now? I would encourage them to take little sips of water regularly as it's better if their stomachs do have something to bring up.

Teddies should go in the washing machine or in the bin if they've been vomited on.

Unmumsnetty hugs to you. It's horrible when our children are ill. I always find it quite stressful and have to remind myself that generally sick bugs don't usually last too long.

Caspianberg · 01/10/2023 10:46

I wouldn’t soak anything, just bedding and teddies straight in washing machine.

Lay towels ontop for bed bottom sheet for tonight. Quicker to take off and change if sick again and can grab to catch anything

Theblacksheepandme · 01/10/2023 10:50

I'm also a firm believer in opening windows and airing the house as much as possible.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 01/10/2023 10:57

Also just keep the best Ted, put the rest on a high shelf or in a cupboard until the bug is over (unless they've already been in the firing line in which case, washing machine). Ditto any special cushions or pillows, no point making work for yourself

thisisasurvivor · 01/10/2023 10:58

Thank you lovely people
Sorry brain was fried earlier

Couldn't remember how long to keep them at home

Just awful

Second time in two weeks 🤢🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

sips of icy water with a straw. Once this is tolerated, flat lemonade and ice lollies.
once that is tolerated, dry stuff ( that they fancy) like Tuc crackers or plain crisps.
then whatever they fancy but avoid dairy for a day or so.

above is what I always did (4dc now in twenties) but it’s the ‘old way’ and might be different now.

coodawoodashooda · 01/10/2023 11:05

Milton for their toothbrushes.

JohnNolan · 01/10/2023 11:08

Disinfect as you go, especially door handle to the toilet and sink taps to try and stop the spread as best you can.

Throw everything straight into the wash, including soft toys.

Full fat lemonade & ready salted crisps for when they start to perk up a bit - nothing too heavy & it replaces some of the nutrients they've lost for being so sick.

Have sick bowls everywhere - easy to clean as you go with those & should reduce the vomit on the carpet, etc.

Good luck - you've got this!

thisisasurvivor · 01/10/2023 11:09

Fabulous

Yes to the sick bowls everywhere

I panic and then don't know what I'm doing so thanks so so much

Move as much out of the potential firing line as possible, so any toys and teddies that havent been hit yet..put in a cupboard, roll up rugs, put a shower curtain over the sofa and then towels on top of that (if they want to lie there and watch tv). Take all the duvets and extra pillows off the bed and just use towels under and over

keep a pile of clean towels in the hall for rapid changes and some bin bags for moving the splatted stuff to the washing machine

if they are still retching and over 2 ish then try some room temp flat coke (full fat version) in small sips for half a hour as its very settling

do not push food too soon, ice lollies can be helpful

just keep the washing machine going full time

I used Ikea rubbish bins as sick catchers as they were deep enough to really catch it and they wash out easily

may the force be with you

SeaToSki · 01/10/2023 11:11

Oh and the most important tip

Never move a vomiting child, it just spreads the vomit. Bring the bowl or towel to the child

PricklyWhenWet · 01/10/2023 11:14

Would recommend an enzyme cleaner for rug and any furnishings that get vomited on too.

ShowOfHands · 01/10/2023 11:16

Solidarity.

My ds has a humdinger of a vomiting bug and when he retches badly, he passes out which means his head falls in the sick bowl. He then "jerks" as his body tries to reset and come round so he flings the sick bowl over himself and anything near him. Toilet isn't much better and headbutting the ceramic bowl is far worse than the plastic bowl. He carries on vomiting while unconscious as well so you have to make sure he doesn't choke.

I'm praying nobody else comes down with it as managing him through an episode is a full time job.

FlyingUnicornWings · 01/10/2023 11:22

From a seasoned Emetophobe my tips are as follows:

Potty training/nappy pads under the poorly babe. Can be binned if puked on.

Disposable sick bowls. Can be binned if puked in. Can get on Amazon.

Any hard surface clean with normal kitchen cleaner with bleach and kitchen towel. Bin the kitchen towel after.

Any soft surface - you can use hydrogen peroxide spray to get rid of stains. A steam cleaner will get rid of the germs.

You can buy Clinell wipes and spray on Amazon. This is what they use in hospitals. Normal anti bac wipes or spray won’t do diddly dot for pukey bugs. I basically go round and wipe off anything that people will touch. Again normal anti bac hang gel doesn’t work on these bugs, you’ll want to look up EcoHydra hand sanitiser on Amazon.

Anything soft and soiled straight into the machine. Dettol laundry disinfectant and 60degrees will bring it up. Tumble try high heat if you have one. Duvets can be washed but I think depends on the type for how hot but to guarantee germs are killed needs to be over 60. Care obviously with teddies if you don’t want them coming out looking deformed. I do find they’re quite hardy though.

If you’ve had a big puke, cover it in clumping cat litter, then you can just put gloves on and scoop it right up. Also doesn’t smell as bad cleaning it up.

Not for kiddies, but if you take activated charcoal from the first time you come in contact with the bug, you’re less likely to get it/get it bad.

I’ve always gone on the nothing in the stomach for 20 mins after being sick, then small sips. Kids are quite good at telling you when they’re okay to eat. I usually offer some ready salted crisps or half a digestive biccie to see if they keep it down. You’re usually in the clear if it’s been 30 mins and you haven’t seen it again. Then you can offer a bit more.

If your babe is really poorly and can’t keep anything down at all, you can do 5ml syringes of dyoralite every 20 mins to try and keep them hydrated.

God speed my friend. You’ve got this. Sending you healthy vibes.

FlyingUnicornWings · 01/10/2023 11:26

Oh and I always use towels/blankets to cover up/keep the babe warm, as you can just put straight in machine if they get sicked on.

thisisasurvivor · 01/10/2023 11:47

Great

And writing these down to share with friends too

Many many thanks xxx

And as for me leading the vomiting child around the room

Oh dear lord 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Never insist on vomit going in the toilet etc. Just let them vomit where they are. Horrible but things can be cleaned - sounds like you are there with the towels/ bowls etc. Read a heart breaking story of a child holding in their vomit to run to the toilet they aspirated on it and died. Better out than in and things can always be cleaned.
Hope they recover quickly.

FlyingUnicornWings · 01/10/2023 11:56

Oh I thought of another one. I use an odour remover called Simple Solution stain an odour remover in the house (mainly for pets but also of soft furnishings/carpet for a freshen up). It’s better than Febreeze which just covers the smell, this breaks it down. It’s got a really mild scent (a bit like almonds). You really don’t need a lot either. It goes a long way.

You can get it in a spray bottle, or in a big bottle that you can use to mop the floor with. It’ll be good to give the house a freshen up once you’re all better.

thisisasurvivor · 01/10/2023 12:01

Ok simple solution on my list now too
