Serious question. Is the site completely anonymous or could my employer track me on here with my personal details surname name email ect

RudsyFarmer · 29/09/2023 21:15

I guess that’s going to depend you who your employers are? FBI? CID? Ministry of Defence? Probably. Tesco? I doubt it.

Hiddenvoice · 29/09/2023 21:16

I don’t believe they can but if it’s worrying you then create a username of random letters and create a new email account to use to sign up, something completely different from your current email account .

I don’t really talk about mn in work as I would rather none of my colleagues looked to find me so I just wouldn’t bring it up and perhaps wouldn’t join in any conversations about it.

Is there a reason why your work would think to look online to find you?

JustAnotherDayInNorfolk · 29/09/2023 21:17

Sadly I was and it formed part of my disciplinary - bastards!

mynameiscalypso · 29/09/2023 21:17

Do you have a work computer and do you access MN on it?

ballsdeep · 29/09/2023 21:17

How did they find out?

also a few years ago many names and email addresses of posters was disclosed

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/09/2023 21:18

I think if I was going to put something revealing about work than I would say, I was in a different country, different gender, different age, different number of children, different job etc. I'd also use a new email address.

daisychain01 · 29/09/2023 21:18

The only people who can see your basic details, I.e. email address that you needed to provide to enrol on MN, is MN HQ. If you haven't provided any other details, how would your employer be able to see them?

if you post something that you subsequently regret, because it can be linked to your real life, just DM the nice MNHQ crew and they are normally very responsive in removing any identifying posts.

AdoraBell · 29/09/2023 21:18

No idea really, depends on the employer.

Edited

Yes this I’d want to know!

AnSolas · 29/09/2023 21:25

Nothing on the web is secure or anonymous

MN would have to comply with a court order.

But if you use company tec including their free /guest network to access the web or allow company access to your personal tec the SM/ IT policy may allow them to track your access to MN.

Cruiser24 · 29/09/2023 21:25

@mynameiscalypso oh no I don't have a computer im purely just wondering

OP posts:
SiobhanSharpe · 29/09/2023 21:29

Don't you have to give a full name as well as an email address when you sign up to MN? I think I had to.
(you just could make up a name? So MN don't know if the name they have for me is my real name or not.... )

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/09/2023 21:31

When you think of the number of threads that the newspapers pick up on, then it would be crazy to write a work one that could be tracked back to you.

JustAnotherDayInNorfolk · 29/09/2023 21:44

I posted about a work situation and God knows how as it was buried in the employment section, which was very vague except for the person who put 2 + 2 together and got 4 - worst 12 months of
my working life with toxic employers and I am so pleased to be out of there...

StowOnTheWold · 29/09/2023 21:47

No, they can only get your IP address. that may be you or it might be a number of people pretending to be you.

If they seize your computer that is different, but that was not what you were asking.

user1471453601 · 29/09/2023 21:49

I don't know about Mumsnet, but daughter tells me.of people who have been doxed (I think that the word for disclosing details about you through tracking your previous posts) on twitter.

The people that are doxed (?) in these cases were blaming the fans of a football club where 97 other fans died -despite an independent review nd a second coreners legal ruling that it was not.

So, I guess if you were to post things that annoyed others and you could be also traced through things like linkin, your employer confined our. But I'd think it was a long shot.

OccasionalHope · 29/09/2023 21:54

Well, don’t use a work device to log on, and don’t say anything that would be likely to identify you or the employer.

No way

That's terrible

One for the lawyers but I believe this might be relevant:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwich_Pharmacal_order

.." .........More recently Norwich Pharmacal orders are used against Internet hosting providers and Internet service providers to identify users which have allegedly engaged in wrongdoing."

I know some forum organisers do occasionally post warnings that if so ordered they'd have to release user details to employers or companies.

StowOnTheWold · 29/09/2023 22:31

@notimagain But what details? What if no personal details are used. Surely there is then only the IP address. That gives the name of the subscriber, not the output. If there are several people in a house, a HMO, a hotel or cafe, surely there is little chance of the information being useful.

All amateur opinion here but if you have a username registered against your e-mail address then AFAIK in extremis the forum HQ can be forced to give all that info up, not just the IP address.

In at least one of those cases listed in wiki the request was for the forum to identify specific users (i.e. who is behind the user name)...- see Totalise vs. Motley Fool .

FWIW I've also seen this warning published on a forum:

"You are responsible for the content you post. This is a public forum. Treat it as if you are speaking in a crowded room. Recent high-profile defamation events illustrate that there are ways in which third parties can force personal data, including contents of personal messages, to be released by bulletin board owners. Be careful - libelous/defamatory posts can and have landed members in legal hot water".

..and finally I've also known somebody subject to some particularly nasty on-line bullying associated with their place of work to succeed in getting the posters identified...

BusyBees1234 · 29/09/2023 23:05

If you use works wifi then they can view every single thing you do and say online, trust me on that

If you use a company laptop, phone etc again, it can all be monitored

steppinforyou · 29/09/2023 23:17

They could track your IP but that's a bit useless as people can either use a VPN or it often changes for some people or houses, cafes or Wi-Fi hotspots etc
