Valium for fear of flying help

meandmygirl1 · 29/09/2023 17:16

I have been able to get Valium from my nhs doctor for years with my issues because of my fear of flying. I called this week and they said guidance has changed and nhs don't provide it anymore.

I wondered would Bupa or a private consultation provide me with it or not?

I am genuinely terrified of flying and have tried fear of flying courses etc so and knowing now I can't get Valium is really really worrying me and I am flying next week.

I can’t help but wonder if there are some GPs who would still prescribe it. For example it’s guidance for a GP not to prescribe anti depressants to under 18s, but DDs GP prescribed it on the basis of a) her need and b) maturity and ability to understand it’s effects.

My friend has always had GP prescribed Valium for flying so i wasn’t aware it wasn’t possible anymore.

What is it about it that you’re afraid of?

I used propanolol for anxiety when I flew. GP happy to give it to me.

I got tranqs prescribed this summer specifically for flying. Can you say it's for something else? If not then I would just hit the brandy.

Can you buy it online?

I have had Valium prescribed to me for flying before; I was just given a few pills and advised to test it at home before the flight.
Maybe the key is to ask for literally a handful of pills.

I got prescribed some two weeks ago. Really helps me.

Try a different GP at your docs, I had one who tried to get me to download a breathing app (ffs), another who suggested I do a fear of flying course (great when I can't even set foot on a plane in the first place), third one gave them to me no problem. Otherwise I'd have just got a friend of a friend to get them for me, do you know anyone a bit dodgy? 😬

Feel for you, fear of flying is one of the only fears I've come across where people are dismissive. Like ok you have a fear of wasps? Here just grab hold of this one hes fine, just breathe 🙄

The prescribing guidelines have changed and insurers may not cover GPs for any issues that arise as a result of prescribing it for flights. There was another thread about this recently
This is the type of information some practices are issuing to patients

My mum was prescribed it on the nhs last week.

I had exactly the same issue. Apparently lots of people take them so the alcohol and it's caused too many issues on flights. Find a private GP and say you're getting panic attacks - don't mention anything about flying at all.

I got some for flying a few weeks ago . I asked for only a couple though, otherwise they can be reluctant to prescribe them for this purpose .
I have also bought them online In the past - not ideal but they were fine.

My son's Dr prescribed diazapam 2 days ago for his long haul flight this Sunday. 2 tablets, one to go,one to come back.

my dd recently was told by the gp she couldn’t be prescribed anything for flying - instead she advised her to try phenergan - that really helped, made her a bit sleepy and took the edge off. (She did the fear of flying ba day and has tried everything else to help) but in the end phenergan makes it easier.
