Any suggestions for a car park close to the Uni, ideally near the maths department?
Everywhere will be busy with train strikes.
Hoping to get there at 9ish.
TIA

Which parts would you recommend walking around that students would be interested in?

The Northern Quarter, the gay village and around the Uni campus going up from Oxford Road. That’s pretty much it!

ScottBakula · 29/09/2023 13:01

Go carful driving around there are lots of 'no car' roads , particularly along Oxford Road between The Royal college of music ( booth St) and Whitworth Park . However there are literally 100s of bus going up and down this stretch of road between Piccadilly Gardens and didsbury ( didsbury is a cool area but comparatively expensive)

The Northan quarter is a excellent area for small restaurants and pubs all within a few mins walk of each other and right on picadilly Gardens.

As pp say I really would not recommend driving around the city center.
Find a carpark ( I dont drive so can't help with that ) and hop on a stagecoach bus.
Ask for a DayRider ticket, this will let you on any stagecoach bus as many times as you want until 4am the following morning for just £5 each .you can pay with cash or contactless.

Just to add to the chaos the Tory Party Conference is on this weekend. Forget the Midland Hotel.

Don’t try and walk from Piccadilly, it’s bloody miles. You should be able to park either at the Aquatics Centre or on the other side of the university in one of the multi-storeys around the hospitals. Unfortunately the University has been designed for students and academics, rather than people who expect to be able to use a car.

ScottBakula · 29/09/2023 13:08

Oooh Manchester United are playing at home too , 3pm kick off .
The ground is a few miles from the city centre but 1000's of fams will be on the roads and trams.
The buses going to the uni should be ok as the don't head towards the footy ground

I parked at the Hospital carpark, it's near the Ronald McDonalds House, on my daughter's graduation day (she got a first and we all left at 6am in the morning to get there). Very close to the University.

I think I'll probably pre-book the NCP Manchester Circle Square car park as it looks straightforward to get to and is between the Uni and the city centre so can go for a wander afterwards.

Park at Derker and catch the tram into Manchester.

I’ve parked at Circle Square, you can walk through to Oxford Road via Hatch, which is v studenty but apparently closed after tomorrow for redevelopment! Deansgate along the canal is a popular nighttime destination for students, you might want to have a look there too. It’s all pretty easy walking distance in the centre.

It's impossible to drive around Manchester without getting a bus lane fine Blush

LoobyDop · 29/09/2023 13:56

It’s true that the city council are openly hostile to car drivers. Which is a mistake- I’ve always thought that the reason the city centre thrived was because it was reasonably accessible. Of course, it isn’t thriving right now…

LlynTegid · 29/09/2023 14:13

Check where the trams go and if you can park near one and take the tram the rest of the way.

chocoshopoholic · 29/09/2023 14:29

When driving in the city, don't forget that road closures and security rings around parts of Manchester are being put into place for the Conservative Party Conference starting from this evening.

I'd like to have my car so we can drive around the city for a while to get a feel for it.

I wouldn't advise driving round Manchester City Center to many one ways etc ,honestly no live about ten miles from Manchester if we go.in we get the train once your in the centre I think you can get any bus ,tram with a central ticket?

x2boys · 29/09/2023 14:44

Idk where you live, but I'm roughly 10 miles from Manchester as well.
I tend to park near the co-op building off Rochdale road and walk down. It's really cheap. Cheaper than buses. But it depends which area you're coming from.

Philomenacunk1 · 29/09/2023 15:03

The aquatics centre will be rammed. The best bet is probably the new NCP car park at circle square https://www.ncp.co.uk/find-a-car-park/car-parks/manchester-circle-square/
it’s just a bit further up from the aquatics centre and doesn’t seem to be as well known yet. You can also pre book to make sure you get a spot.

Manchester Circle Square Car Park - NCP

View the car park information for our Manchester Circle Square car park. 1000+ spaces. A few minutes' walk from major attractions.

Oh actually - it’s the Tory party conference on Saturday so forget trying to drive anywhere around the city!

Ha ha, yup, I got lost & ended up in a bus lane before driving down a one way street then the grand finale stalling at lights & blocked a tram. The most stressful drive of my life.

Soontobe60 · 29/09/2023 12:23

This is a BAD idea! Driving in the city centre is horrendous on a normal day, but when its a Uni open day its even worse - it’s mostly a ring road anyway. It’s a small city centre, very walkable.

I agree with this.
Driving around would not give you a good impression of the city.
I would park and walk.
Enjoy your visit!

The city centre is ... something else. Even on normal days. Seems, on the whole, on a bigger scale and built for different types of public transport than London, as most of the roads are more modern (and some still part of major building works with through ways blocked off). I couldn't find my way off the main station plaza for longer than I'd care to admit, and took a minibus in order to do so.

  • Look up the bus gates - lots of car fines have been slapped recently and they change rules and roads overnight sometimes without warning.
  • I would say park and ride on the side that will get you to the uni. Metro trams and (normally) stopper trains were great.

It's not really the sort of city you drive round
