When you’re addicted to sugar but want to stay away from processed foods 😞

The struggle is real!

I am so bored of fruit, nuts and Greek yoghurt.

I am so desperate for a chocolate bar, biscuits, choc ices, chocolate fudge cake, chocolate mousse, any type of cake really, sticky toffee pudding…

I am so jealous of people who don’t have a sweet tooth!

I can’t do it either and even when I try not to buy it so we only have healthy options it lasts two minutes as someone else will bring it home and I’ll devour it! I’ve heard if you can crack it for three weeks you’re cured…meanwhile I struggle to get through 3 hours!

Make your own fruit leather
or cakes, fudge, sticky toffee pudding...

Dates are good. Organic dark chocolate. Crystalised ginger.
I don't have a sweet tooth usually but if I am stressed I do.

Medjool dates. The really pricey sticky gooey ones. Plus make your own chocolate avocado mousse.

I hear you but processed foods are not the solution. What about little sweet treats? If you’re weaning off sugar a mug of tea or coffee with sugar can really hit the spot. Homemade hot chocolate? Or full fat Greek yoghurt with chopped fruit and a spoonful of honey? I’ve gotten myself back onto that after for years eating yoghurt liberally spread with brown sugar.

ThatsMeTold · 28/09/2023 23:07

Dates with a sizzle of nut butter and a twist of salt.
Date ‘caramel’. If you blitz dates and some almond butter in a high speed blender with a bit of water it makes a delicious caramel.

I have almost eaten a jar of chocolate spread since Saturday mind. I just eat the healthy stuff first and then, unable to resist, still devour the sugar.

ThatsMeTold · 28/09/2023 23:09

Ooh yes ‘chocado’ (chocolate avocado mousse) it still has sugar though as it’s sweetened with honey or maple syrup. They may be natural but it’s still sugar!

smilesup · 28/09/2023 23:09

The only way I could break it was to stop almost all sugar (so no fruit, especially dried bye bye dates, raisins etc) .

I massively uped my protein in take, stopped almost all milk except in tea. Feel 1000 times better and don't really like chocolate anymore after 3 months.
I was an absolute sugar addict before!

Tireddoggy · 28/09/2023 23:10

I am on a low carb diet which I am smashing..managed to loose 6 kegs in 2 weeks!! I recommend buying the fun size bars and that is my treat before I go to bed .
pit really is working and the 16:8 is so doable

mikado1 · 28/09/2023 23:12

Addict here also. Cut out sugar and flour and the (physical) cravings disappear v quickly. Worth a try. Best thing I ever did, feel finally free. Sounds dramatic but sugar addicts will get it I think!

KirstenBlest · 28/09/2023 23:13

I found that not eating much carbs in the morning helped a lot.

The OP literally specifies that she's totally (see what I did there?) bored of Greek yogurt.

S910441 · 29/09/2023 00:07

Well you could make your own biscuits and cakes. They wouldn't be sugar-free but they would at least not be ultra-processed.

Or there's a good recipe for banana chocolate mousse which is basically equal quantities of banana (v ripe, mashed), chocolate (dark, melted), natural yoghurt and double cream (whipped). Mix everything together and refrigerate. Obviously still has sugar and fat in it, but better than shop-bought chocolate mousse.

loveyouradvice · 29/09/2023 00:57

for me learning to like very dark chocolate - 85% Lindt, or 70% + Montezums (loads of flavours) - was what really helped. One or two squares a day. Often with a few almonds or walnuts.

It is now rare that this isn't enough - but masses of hormones or emotions will steer me towards the less healthy stuff. I just get back on it as soon as I can.

coxesorangepippin · 29/09/2023 01:30

Dried fruit
Full fat cheese

Chivescreamcheese · 29/09/2023 01:40

If avoiding processed food is your aim (rather than avoiding fat and sugar) I would recommend you get into baking. Plenty of sweet treats you can bake which at least means you are eating less processed food. Won't help you with the sweet tooth of course!

junbean · 29/09/2023 01:44

I could live off sugar. If you completely cut it out cold turkey, the cravings go away. When you start eating it again it does come back. Eventually your taste buds will reset and sugary foods will be too sweet. It just takes some will power to get there.

I agree with baking- we make everything with dates and whole foods, it's so delicious. It might take some time for your taste buds to adjust.
