Trains going by

I live right next to a railway line. There are many freight and passenger trains go by at 20 minute intervals. Passenger trains only during the day, but freight trains throughout the night. I was fully aware, when we bought the house, that there would be trains going by day and night.

But I really love hearing the trains going by. They never wake me up if I'm asleep.
But if I'm having a wakeful night they are very lulling. The tickety boo is more
likely to make me sleep than wake me up. I just think of the driver who is taking freight from the east to the west coast or something. He's awake. So am I.
When I hear a freight train going by at 3am I feel like somebody else is also awake. I don't sleep well generally but I sometimes wish I was sitting next to the driver and going somewhere..

My parents house had a train line at the end of the garden and I miss it. When choosing between two houses, I ruled out one with a train line at the end of the garden. What was I thinking? I think that's why the shipping forecast is so comforting - someone else is awake but you're safe in bed.

I live quite close to a rail line here in Alberta, Canada. We get huge trains coming through, often 100+cars. Sometimes it is wood, sometimes potash or shipping containers. I like to imagine what’s in them and where they’ve been/are going.

And most years the Canadian Pacific Christmas Train comes through.

Ooh, XpelairHamPortal - that looks very interesting. I've bookmarked that link.

I used to live in a house so close to a train my bed would shake violently at night. It was crazy. I would often daydream about jumping on a car and seeing where it takes me. I've met a few people who "ride the rails" and it sounds amazing. In another life maybe lol.

@TheYearOfSmallThings : no one is too old for Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

I have a railway line just the other side of the road. There is a branch line that comes into the station and call me someone who needs to get a hobby but I enjoy watching the lit up train at night as it snakes slowly down the line into the station. When I was working I'd be half asleep in the morning, hear the first trains (5.30ish) and know I had half an hour before getting up.

We occasionally get the steam trains as well.

I don't know how she manages to sleep in her bedroom especially in the Summer with the windows open as it is so noisy and there is a streetlight right outside her bedroom. But she finds it hard to sleep when she visits me because it's too quiet and too dark!

Sounds like my bedroom. My late aunt lived in rural France and you could hear the silence. Staying with her took me ages to get to sleep because there were no trains as white noise.

Late FIL had a caravan about 20 ft from a main train line. I used to sleep like a baby there. Funnily enough DH was just showing me a house near a railway line on Zoopla.

My friend has a train track at the end of his garden and I am envious! Also, no noisy neighbours' gardens to back onto his as there's a Trainline in the way! He loves trains too.

I love the distant sound of our overground train clack-clacking along at night when we sit in our garden. We do a lot of trips via train so this has happy associations

I live right by a train line and love it. There's a big freight train that goes by around 4am.
