Hi everyone,

Im not long moved into a new area and I have a lovely neighbour who was so kind and welcoming on moving in. They are a young family with children and currently have their house all decorated for Eid Mubarak, please excuse me if I have the name wrong. I’m not Muslim and know little about the celebrations, I am aware they sometimes involve fasting. They have lovely young children and not sure if it’s appropriate to hand in a little gift like sweets or cakes? All I really know is no gelatine (or think I know) but is this appropriate for this kind of celebration? I’ve read a little online to see what it means but not sure if it’s this type of celebration were you would give gifts? Their house looks beautiful my own child was super excited thinking it was Christmas decorations!

Sorry for my ignorance with this!

Thanks for thinking so kindly of them! It’s not Eid, so it might be worth checking what they’re celebrating.

You’re right, no gelatine is the main thing to think about here (aside the general things about whether parents want their kids to have sweets!!). If you do go down the sweets route, halal harribo is usually in supermarkets in the Asian food section.

Hi OP, cakes or something would be fine. If you're unsure about ingredients just make sure they say they're suitable for vegetarians and that will solve the problem.

Just for info, the Eid they are celebrating today is not the Eid associated with the end of Ramadan when we fast, it is Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him)'s birthday. There are a few different Eids.

Rabbi al awwal 3rd month of the Islamic calendar that contains their prophets birthday

Well this is what I thought as Eid is at a different time of year. So when I googled (So embarrassing) it came up this:
Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi Mubarak and I’ve heard Eid Mubarak before so assumed (wrongly I’m sure) that this was the shortened name 🙈 Oft maybe I will leave it I really wouldn’t want to insult them. She was so nice when we moved in and made a point of welcoming us. One of those people that you instantly like because they are so bubbly and kind. Thought it would be nice to take note but maybe would be a bad thing as might end up doing the wrong thing 🙈

Eid Mubarak is a greeting. It means 'Happy Eid' basically.

confusedmum2023 · 28/09/2023 21:18

Thanks you @TulipsTulipTulips I wasn’t aware of this until I saw the decorations last night and had a check. Ramadan is really the only celebration I know a little about as my mums friend is Muslim. However she is in hospital after having a baby so didn’t think it appropriate to text her 🤣

It could be a lovely icebreaker OP, to take something round to thank them for being so welcoming and ask about the celebration “I can see you are celebrating. Your decorations are lovely. Could you tell me more about the celebration?” It’s not insulting to ask 🙂

So is this the same greeting for this celebration? Really sad and embarrassing it’s what I got from Google lol. Maybe just see if I bump into her and ask then that way I won’t be doing or saying anything inappropriate 🙈 My mum says I was born with foot in mouth disease hence why I thought i’d check on here 🤣

I think that’s a good idea and great wording. I’m terrible with wording things in any social situations I struggle and overthink! It’s just to be neighbourly as she was to me.

This is really sweet of you. Just go round and say you’ve got them a little gift as you understand they’re celebrating the prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) birthday. Or if you want to, then you’d say Eid Milad-Un-Nabi Mubarak.

Anything labelled suitable for vegetarians is fine, as long as it doesn’t contain alcohol. A tub of celebrations, heroes, ferrero’s, cake etc.

Fab thanks. I think I will grab a box of celebrations after work and do that tomo and hopefully will go well! I’m glad I asked now because I was worried on what to say. I never used to be like this but ill health has left me with a scrambled brain. I read too much MN and people on here seem to take offence at such small things nowadays that I worry more about saying the wrong thing to strangers! There was a poor older man carrying really heavy stuff out of Argos walking home and I wanted to pull over and offer him a lift but then worried he would be insulted 🤣 I need to get a hobby and stop worrying so much!

Aww, it’s a lovely thing to do and I’m sure they’ll be really appreciative ❤

Thanks for the help everyone x
