Are Elflocs valid or still cultural appropriation?

I have seen on a Facebook discussion that white people who have locs, are not culturally appropriating, and it's ok to wear your hair in that style if you are not black.

I like the look of well done dreads on anyone really, but would not put them on myself as a white woman as have always believed it to be cultural appropriation. But am I wrong in this belief? Is it ok for white people to wear dreads/locs?

There were a few "well vikings did it, and the celts" I'm not convinced on that one to be honest as as far as I know (I don't know much tbh) there is no proof of this.

I do not mean to insult anyone with this, I'm not asking the black community to educate me (which is why I haven't posted in black mumsnetters) but I am curious

My thoughts on this are that if I don’t brush my (blond straight) hair for a couple of days it naturally starts to dread. And that plenty of our ancestors wouldn’t have owned a comb. So it’s inevitable that a great many of our European white ancestors had dreadlocks.
I don’t think it’s cultural appropriation at all. Having said that it’s not a hairstyle I like on anyone particularly.
