Going gluten free has changed my life

No more intense stomach cramps, no more brain fog where I can barely concentrate enough to push a trolley around a supermarket or safely cross a road, no more aching legs after walking up a few steps, no more afternoon naps and exhaustion.

I tested negative for coeliac disease, but after doing a food diary noticed that after eating a lot of gluten I'd have a really upset stomach that would make me feel like I was going to faint from the pain. I gave up gluten for a couple of days as a test and haven't gone back since and it's been 6 weeks. I feel like a completely different person.

Anyone else found going gluten free to be the answer to their health issues?

Yes. Same as you. Not coeliac but gluten, yeast, wheat reactive. Much better for giving it all up.

I've suffered horribly since I was a child with digestive problems. Severe bloating, nausea, headaches, rashes, brain fog, constipation and diarrhoea. I was tested for celiac disease years ago and it was negative so I continued eating gluten. I tried cutting out lactose, sugar and alcohol but nothing helped.

About a month ago I cut out gluten entirely. I cannot believe the difference. A whole new life! I feel like I have missed out on so much. I guess it's gluten intolerance rather than celiac disease?

I tested negative for coeliac but my Mum has it. I cut out gluten and couldn't believe how different I felt.
I just thought everyone felt sick and shit all the time.
I was under a gastro team and they said I probably have 'non-coeliac gluten sensitivity ' which is where you basically have coeliac symptoms but your immune system isn't involved in the same way.

Yes! Not coeliac but very sensitive to gluten and cut it out 12 months ago. If I stray and eat it now, the next day my joints ache, my stomach hurts and my face is puffy. It bothers me that my body was dealing with that inflammation daily for decades.

Can I ask what foods you cut out ie what foods contain gluten thank u

Ohthatsabitshit · 28/09/2023 21:57

I found the same. Gave up gluten for a year then dh joined me. We both feel enormously better.

cocksstrideintheevening · 28/09/2023 22:19

@LesleyA it's fairly comprehensive, have a google

I'm intolerant to gluten, not coeliac, and it's important to recognise that an intolerance is very different to coeliac

For me I cut out any foods containing wheat and or gluten, but I'm able to eat foods that may contain wheat or may contain gluten. Barley is also ok for me. I've only been doing it since jul but it's made a massive difference. I no longer have stomach issues, no longer have a massive energy slump mid afternoon. Well maybe occasionally I do but that's more if I've sat doing FA all day at home. Brain fogs gone too. For me the hardest part at first was giving up normal bread, but now gluten free bread to me is fine. I mean I still wouldn't rate it at the top of my list for a decent sarnie but it suffices. I still can't bring myself to try the gluten free steak pies though just in case they're crap. The most annoying part is picking up something like a tin of soup only to find it contains wheat. I just wish shops would do more of a gluten free range in the sandwich section. The M&S gluten free chicken and bacon sandwich I had on holiday was lovely but sadly my nearest store is 20 miles away.

I recommend the Pieminister GF pies and Heck 97% meat pork sausages. I dont eat either often but have found both trouble free. Quite odd to eat pastry with no consequences.

Me too. I developed IBS in my first pregnancy. Of course, I didn't realise at the time that that's what it was - I just put the bloating, tiredness, constipation, etc down to pregnancy and then I just kind of ignored it and hoped it would go away eventually. It didn't and several years later, after ruling out coeliac disease, my doctor told me I have IBS and recommended I keep a food diary to identify trigger foods.

I cut out gluten 12 years ago and have never looked back. The permanent 5-months pregnant bloated stomach is gone. The tiredness, the bags under my eyes, the puffiness all over my body - all gone. I'll never eat gluten again.

Oh I'll have a look for those pies, where sells them please? Tried the heck gluten free sausages they aren't too bad and some of the Aldi gluten free ones are nice. I had some gluten free pork, sun dried tomato and pesto sausages they were lovely albeit slightly spicy

I think most supermarkets have Pieminister pies but make sure you buy the GF ones. Get mine from Waitrose if you cant find them elsewhere.
