Period knickers, is it me, or am I doing something wrong?

So I purchased some Cheeky Wipes period knickers, the heavy flow ones, thinking they would be better than pads.

However I’m on my 3rd day with them now and I’m finding them such a faff!

You have to take your trousers off to change them, I’m on my 3rd pair today and have spent 15 mins with the tap constantly running rinsing out knickers.

The blood goes all over my hands and just seems to take forever to rinse out.

I don’t know were to put them once they have been rinsed without them dripping everywhere, as they haven’t been spun in a machine etc.

I draped them over the bath until I was to put a dark wash on, only to then find that they left a stain in my bath (stone bath) which would only come off with a special cleaner.

Am I missing something here? I feel like they’re more work than they’re worth.

I have very heavy periods and think they are fantastic. Haven't had a leak since wearing them but use a tampon too on heaviest days.

I've tried most brands but find primark the best. No smell like I used to have with pads. I rinse them in cold water after use and then wash them on a hot wash afterwards.

Peacendkindness · 28/09/2023 19:12

I got DD a wet proof bag - and she puts them in there - then they go under the shower head on the bath and washed and rung out and then straight in the wash. Both of us have heavy periods and a pair lasts us all day - but we are modi bodi heavy flow girls

rollonretirementfgs · 28/09/2023 19:13

Yeah I agree, they seem to 'pool' the blood. I use them with tampons as a bit of reassurance

My daughter uses Modibodi ones with no issue and wears them all day until before bed. They go in a small plastic box in the bathroom and I wash them when it's full (timed with a regular coloured load). I tend to do a quick 15min cold programme in the washing machine to get the blood out and then I add regular coloured washing for a full 30 degree wash.

I don't use fabric conditioner when I wash them and I try to remember to turn the spin speed down a bit too.

We started rinsing them out by hand in the sink but it was so messy.

F0Xintherainbow · 28/09/2023 19:20

Put them on a rinse first in the washing machine then stick in with the normal wash

declutteringmymind · 28/09/2023 19:22

I wear my wuka with a tampon and a pad. Throughout the day the tampon is removed first, followed by the pad then the wuka goes in a caddy to soak. Another pair for bed. The caddy contents get their own wash after the period has ended.

Jifmicroliquid · 28/09/2023 19:27

I don’t get on with them either OP. I tend to wear them at night as I don’t have to worry about leaks and pads folding up as I move, but in the daytime I just find them quite gross and I feel like I want to change them after a few hours.
I went back to pads and tampons during the day.

HappyAsASandboy · 28/09/2023 19:38

I use the cheeky wipes heavy flow pants.

I use two pairs per day, changing morning and night. There is often blood on the surface, still soaking in, but I don't change them because of that and they never leak

When I take them off I put them in a wetbag and leave them there, no rinsing.

At the end of my cycle I empty the wet bag into the washing machine, run a 30° 45 min cycle, then add my dark washing and wash that as normal.

I don't rinse them as I go. That sounds very messy.

newhere24 · 28/09/2023 19:58

I just put in a wet bag, and then in the wash. no rinsing. Don’t use fabric conditioner, it reduces how much they can absorb

MonkeyChiselTree · 28/09/2023 20:10

I wear them and change 3-4 times a day. If I'm honest I don't rinse them in cold water. I put them in a bag/box and wash every other day on a no fabric softener 30 degree wash with a cold pre rinse. Been doing that for 4 years and it's absolutely fine.

Getawaytoblazes · 28/09/2023 20:14

I used them before I went on contraception which has more or less stopped my periods!

I agree the soaking / rinsing and then leaving them hanging round wet while I waited to have enough to make a load of washing was quite faffy.

I also didn't like wearing them all day and didn't want to take my trousers off and change them at work. I prefer reusable pads tbh. You're still meant to rinse them though.

Maybe a menstrual cup would be better?

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 28/09/2023 20:17

I don't rate the cheeky monkey ones. I do rate modi bodi and I have I heavy flow. I also have a soaking bucket. Fill with cold water. Chuck pants in there when changing twice a day in heavy days. Wash in 15 mins wash in the washing machine at night. Job done

SquishyGloopyBum · 28/09/2023 20:19

Did you wash them in fabric softener?

DumpedByText · 28/09/2023 20:20

You need Modibodi period pants, my DD wears one pair all day. She has the heavy flow shorts and never leaks. She's at dance college and dances 6 hours a day and swears by them. Not cheap but worth the money.

Did you wash the pants before first wearing them? You need to wash on 30 or 40, no fabric softener and I pop them on the radiator in winter.

DumpedByText · 28/09/2023 20:22

Oh and we don't rinse, they go in the wash on their own. Always come out fresh and clean.

humus · 28/09/2023 20:22

On heavy days I use a tampon as well as overnight modibodi, I just pip on a bin until ready to wash then straight into washing machine.

itsgettingweird · 28/09/2023 20:29

AHelpfulHand · 28/09/2023 13:51

What do you do with them when they’re wet?

I feel like I’m looking for washing to put in with them so they aren’t hanging around wet

Get a small bin with a lid and put them in there. Use nappy sacks or waterproof wash bag for when you're out.

Vintagevixen · 28/09/2023 20:44

I don't use them (too old!) but DD does. Uses a mixture of Modibodi and M&S ones. I fill a small bucket with water, she chucks them in when used.

When I've got 2 - 3 pairs it's straight out the bucket for a good hot wash on their own. Dirty water from soaking down the toilet.

But them I'm a nurse and not squeamish about body fluids, just get on with it!

Openup · 28/09/2023 20:53

My dd uses the, I wait until there are a few dirty pairs and put them on a quick rinse cycle in the machine before washing them, this saves me having a load of wet pairs hanging around.

Resisterance · 28/09/2023 20:53

Oh that's strange, I love cheeky wipes period pants. I think they are far better than Modibodi which I also have.

I sometimes if having a heavier period use a panty liner with them on day one but otherwise just wipe and have then on and overnight and changing the next morning. Very occasionally if super heavy then I might change twice in one day but that's very rare.

You haven't said how heavy your periods are ( or maybe I missed that) or if you're menopausal as periods really change then and I've noticed mine have got heavier.

But I love mine and wouldn't go back to the moon cup I had before. I've been using then 6 years and think they're great!

Resisterance · 28/09/2023 20:55

I just wash mine straight in the washing machine. No soaking

TeenLifeMum · 28/09/2023 21:20

Dd uses them but with a tampon on heavy days then just the pants the rest of her period. They last morning to night. She rinses in the utility sink and leaves them in a small bin (like a food waste style one).

TeenLifeMum · 28/09/2023 21:21

Meant to say, hers are cheeky wipes and seem much better than modibodi. I’m impressed how thin they are and how absorbent they are.

AHelpfulHand · 28/09/2023 22:46

many thanks all!!

I think I’m going to try the method of no rinsing by hand, only by machine and see if that’s better

Period knickers are fine for light flow but pretty horrible on heavy days. The feeling of dampness and the smell is unpleasant. I also find they do leak after a few hours on those heavy days.

I can only assume those who wear the same pair for 12+ hour have a very light flow.

I really wanted to like them, but now I keep them for light days and back to tampons for the heavier times.
