Car insurance cost… what on earth?!!

I’ve been driving for 4 years. No claims.
Drive a 1 litre, on the small side of average 4 year old car.

The cheapest insurance quote I can get is £700 for the year and I’d need a black box. This is using a comparison tool online.

2 years ago my insurance was £450 for the year. Nothing has changed, except I’ve got more driving experience?! Adding additional named drivers makes no difference. I don’t understand.

Combined, me and DH (driving the same length as time as me) our policy is £1800 or £150 a month for both cars. Both several year old cars, albeit his is worth a bit more than mine. Both cars do normal amount of yearly mileage and mine is at home most the day and on the drive all night.

Is this just normal cost now?

Yes it seems it! My insurance cost more than double with no changes to it. I read on here something about a change to introductory offers - couldn’t offer new customers better deals than existing customers… so there’s just very little competition now.

We usually pay annually to get it out of the way but couldn’t afford that this year so have had to agree to yet another monthly bill which just really makes me anxious!

Anyway. You’re not alone!

It’s sickening! Like we all needed more bills at the moment, lol

Make sure you do a quick look online on comparison sites before accepting a renewal. Many times the insurance companies are just chancing their arm that people will auto renew.

Mine was quoted at almost double the previous year. I looked on comparison sites, found an equivalent (not just the cheapest), phoned my insurers back and they matched it without argument - which meant my premium actually dropped slightly!

Our current provider is the cheapest - we auto renewed but fought them to make it cheaper and they did, a little. By far the cheapest vs the other quotes we can get

Our current excess (voluntary and compulsory) is £600! I thought that was astronomical. But on all the quotes we can get it’s at least £750 in total.

Yes, the price of cars has gone up significantly.

Vinorosso74 · 28/09/2023 09:23

We had our renewal through and ours has gone up to £500. It's been £250/£300 for a while so this is quite a big jump. The only way I can get it down is with a huge excess with insurers with bad reviews.

bluebird3 · 28/09/2023 09:27

Same, mine went up a lot for no reason. When I queried it the insurer just said they were having more claims so their costs have gone up. I know where I live car thefts and burglaries have increased a lot so maybe there is some truth to it.

defi · 28/09/2023 09:30

Mine went up, I shopped around and found a deal for the same price as the year before. Best I could get. Id expect it to go down every year

TriceratopsRocks · 28/09/2023 09:33

Check Direct Line too - they aren't on comparison sites, and for years they were the cheapest for me. Not this year though - I've just moved elsewhere - but they tend to be worth a look.

Carnewb · 28/09/2023 09:40

I've just got my first car, passed my test a month ago and car is 1.2, 11 years old. Some companies refused to quote me at all and the cheapest I could get is £140 a month, fully comp, £600 excess.
I get that I'm higher risk because I'm a new driver but I'm 44 so I dread to think about younger new drivers trying to get insurance. My postcode probably has a lot to do with it as does only having on street parking.
Quite disheartened that it would appear that it's only going to go up and not down as a I gather experience too, and that's assuming I don't have an accident.

randomrandom · 28/09/2023 09:41

We have multicar cover, I have 22years no claims and DH has 7 years - we went from £800 last year to £1365 this year. I got it down to £1245 but it's still a ridiculous increase for absolutely no reason

PenguinIce · 28/09/2023 09:56

My dc is paying close to £2000. Was expecting it as a new driver and young. What shocked me most was the insurance company have limited the amount of miles each month so dc gets to drive to work and back and that is it.

334bu · 28/09/2023 10:16

Been with Direct Line for years and this year premium shot up. Phoned and told that was the renewal rate and nothing could be done. Now with another company paying same as last year.
