Jesmond road recommendations

Thinking about moving to Jesmond in Newcastle. Ideally don’t want to be right in the middle of student parties, so are there roads recommended for being a bit quieter? Or roads to avoid?

I lived in Jesmond as a student! Albeit 25 years ago. It is (was) pretty studenty, but the smarter streets closer to the Dene/further from Osborne Rd tended to be less so. The terraces of Tyneside flats, more so, especially closer to W Jesmond metro.

I'm sure someone will be along with more up to dare advice!

MsSquiz · 27/09/2023 20:23

You might be better going for Gosforth rather than Jesmond? It is still quite a studenty area, unless you're looking at the large houses that come with a pretty hefty price tag

Someone else said the same about going for Gosforth instead. Does it have a nice high street, although probably doesn’t matter so much, with being so close to city. Would like a family friendly area and to get to know other people!

There are some huge houses with very high price tags! Look fab but not in our budget sadly!

That’s great, gives me a starting point of where to look!

What's your budget? I'd say Gosforth too although the high street has terrible traffic. It's an ok high street but not lovely. Jesmond is studenty but has more residential areas. You need to look in term time!

Thought about Tynemouth at the coast?

Our top budget would be 800,000 but preferably much lower. The difficult thing about Jesmond and Gosforth is the schools are all full! Private school for 3 is just on an other level of expensive! Would love to win the lottery!
Tynemouth does look nice and schools meant to be good on the coast.

Look at Jesmond park west or top of Heaton road. You'd get a nice place in budget there. Or South Gosforth.

I would go for Gosforth personally. Some lovely roads off the High Street. I also lived in Jesmond as a student! More residential towards the Dene area of Jesmond and also towards where Ilford road metro is. My dh is from Gosforth and I love the high street.

I’d go for Whitley Bay/Cullercoats/Tynemouth, schools are fantastic, mostly three tier so no big jump from primary to secondary, beach on your doorstep, easy links to the city on the metro and up the coast road. What’s not to love?

MiniGinny · 27/09/2023 23:47

What takes you to Jesmond?
There are other nice areas within a few miles of the city where you can get much more with that enormous budget.

Gosforth is way nicer than Jesmond. Lovely middle school system as well.

I’ve had a look on the Newcastle council website and literally all the Gosforth schools are full, no spaces at all! Such a shame as they have good reputations!

its really as I’ve lived in a rural area for years now and I’m really bored (mid life crisis?!) and a lively place appeals! Are there areas you can recommend?

DS lived in Jesmond as a student and it was heaving with students. There were some families but I wouldn't have wanted to live there as a family-even things like unkempt front gardens make it obvious it is a student area. Although there is a Waitrose!!
He has stayed in Newcastle and is now in Gosforth-it is really lovely and with the great metro accessible to everything.

If she needs to be at university classes, that may not be the best idea. The Metro is pretty hitty-missy at the moment!

MsSquiz · 28/09/2023 21:52

Gosforth high street is pretty decent - lots of shops, pubs, coffee shops and restaurants and is also walking distance for Newcastle city centre

I've lived in Jesmond all my life and still do, there are plenty of parts in Jesmond with no students. We live in one of those areas. There are also a lot of families with children in Jesmond, clubs for adults and children, it's has a nice safe community feel.

Please don't be put of by people saying students, to those living in Jesmond we know the pockets of areas where the students are and I even know families who live in those parts and have reported it being a bonus at times especially getting a babysitter. The students are far better than what it was 20+ years ago the university's even funded police officers to keep the area safe and friendly.
