Dc2 is 6, and reads well. He is a "free reader" at school, so doesn't need to have the school reading books (although he does still have them)

However, he's finding it really difficult to choose a book to read and stick with. Books ate either too "babyish" or too long/text filled.

We have loads of books as dc1 reads a lot but I feel we need different books for dc2.

Books he has liked :
Bear and Rabbit series
Bear Grylls adventures
Famous 5/secret 7 shorter stories (the more modern ones)
Dog man.

Trouble is he gets through some of these VERY quickly. But it's a big step to the other books we have. Any suggestions?

Look at the Boffin Boy books. They're meant for slightly older children, but are recommended for reluctant readers because of their easier voacbulary so should be fine for your DS. This sort of thing

Thanks, I'll have a look.

He has a tendency to choose books that are a bit sinister, then worry about them!

One of mine loved Dick King-Smith books at that age.

Chris Hoy and frank Lampard both have series that my now just 8 year old loves. Dinosaur cove series is also a good set.

Others - Dave Lowe - the my hamster is a.......
or squirrel boy books. Wiggles bottom primary books are also good.

Claude books
Dave Pigeon
Astrosaurs
Space Penguins

Flat Stanley
Many of the Dick King Smith books (DD loved the Sheep Pig though the text is dense and not many pictures)
Jill Tomlinson animal books
Roald Dahl

DD also enjoyed the Ottaline books and Isadora Moon books but these are probably a bit 'girly'!

The Owl that was Afraid of the Dark (nods to INeedNewShoes)
Beasts of Olympus
Olga da Polga

And there's always Beast Quest ...

Bemyclementine · 27/09/2023 13:42

He does have beast quest but they are a bit much for him atm.

Some of the suggestions I think look great, bit he would discuss as 'babyish' from the covers

Raymond Biggs - Fungus the Bogeyman
Enid Blyton - Magic Faraway Tree
Lucy Brandt - Leonora Bolt books
Pamela Butchart - Wigglesbottom Primary books
Roald Dahl - Magic Finger, BFG, James and the Giant Peach
Olaf Falafel - Trixie Pickle books
Andy Griffiths - Treehouse books
Swapna Haddow - Dave Pigeon
Dick King-Smith - Sheep-Pig
Dermot O’Leary - Toto books
Jamie Smart - Bunny vs Monkey books, Looshkin books
Alex T Smith - Claude books
Andy Stanton - Mr Gum books
Judd Winick - Hilo books
Henry Winkler - Here’s Hank books

Also yes bloody Beast Quest - I’ve had several nephews go through the obsession. They are the most tedious stories but the boys seem to love them.

Iateitallofit · 27/09/2023 15:23

The 13 storey treehouse books tend to go down well with that age group.

Icedblondelatte · 27/09/2023 16:14

If beast quest is too much then some of these might be too but here's my suggestions:

  • the cat and the king by Nick Sharratt
  • hotel flamingo
  • my brother's famous bottom series by Jeremy strong
  • the jolly rogers series (there's a series of chapter books, not just picture books)
  • level up! By tom nicoll
  • Ricky ricotta's mighty robot
