How do holiday clubs work in England?

I grew up in a village in England but emigrated in my early 20s so I don't know how a lot of stuff works when you are an adult. If I wanted to sign my children up for a holiday club in or near my old village some time, is that something I could do? They are 8 and 6 so primary age. I was thinking maybe Easter holidays or next summer, when we are staying with my parents / their grandparents.

The reason I would want to do this is that I think it would be good for their English. They do speak English well, but they never play in English with peers their own age so that's not something they get to practise.

How can I find out what the provisions are at my old school or a nearby school? Are holiday clubs just for the children who actually go to a certain school or are they theoretically open to anyone? Will the other children all know each other and not play with my kids anyway? Would it be considered very cheeky to book a place for social reasons rather than because I need the childcare?

Sorry for the many questions.

It’s not just schools that provide holiday club care these days, our local soft play and trampoline park both offer holiday are including means for a fraction of the price, they do crafts and trips as well as the play equipment it’s £20 a day!! The school care club won’t be just for that school our holiday club is in another local school and I’ve noticed lots of home school children use it? Your best asking your parents to ask around to see which is the best, do they have neighbours with young children they could ask?

Including food not means 🙄

Round here they are mostly run at local high schools but for primary aged kids and def not restricted to kids from certain schools
there are far more sporty/football ones than any other kind which I find quite annoying as a mother of a non-sporty child. Quite unusual round here to have a “for everyone” kind.

It does depend a bit on the club but in my limited experience of where I live, most holiday clubs are run by separate companies, usually using a school or similar as a location but not restricted to kids actually from that school - more that they’re good locations that are available in holidays to use for kids.
It’d be totally fine to use them “for fun” as well as for childcare - often they run a shorter day eg 10-3.30, and those parents who want full wraparound care pay for “early bird” and “end of day” extensions.

I’d google the name of the location, maybe the larger nearby town as well, plus “holiday clubs” and see what comes up. There’ll likely be ones based in schools, ones at leisure centres, and more focussed sporty ones eg holiday tennis sessions, based at the specific sport club.

Also see if you can ask on a local Facebook group - I think people would be happy to advise.

You tend to need to book in advance as well - the later you leave it the fewer days might be available - but in my experience it’s not a “months and months” in advance thing.

Sounds like a good plan anyway. If you’re in the right area, the best camps we used were Barracudas, but they were much more expensive than some others. After many years of trying different ones though, I think they were worth paying for if you can.

Mine go to a leisure centre setting during colder months and a farm all summer. Both amazing clubs and take a packed lunch each day.
They’re great for socialising

Thanks so much for the advice! This has given me a lot of good pointers.

Our village is in the North Somerset / Bristol area, if anybody happens to know anything good round there more specifically Grin

I looked into one that looked promising but it seems they want information about the child's GP in order to register. Not trying to book anything yet but I was just exploring how it worked. Is that normal?? I obviously can't provide details of a UK based GP for them and their system doesn't recognise phone numbers from another country as legitimate.

Closer to the time I was thinking I will contact them to see if that's really necessary - I assume it'll be possible to make an exception.

But is there anything else that might be an issue since the kids aren't UK residents?
