Posting for traffic
I have the worst head cold at the moment but by far the worst thing is the congested feeling behind my nose. Always the same.

anywah the max strength cold and flu paracetamol tablets don’t help at all
I need the most industrial strength decongestant medicine available. So I’m off to the pharmacy shortly- what do I ask for?

I recently bought a sinus irrigation kit for about £12, and it has already made a big difference. It's a very strange sensation but it's only a few seconds and really helps.

The Vicks sinex micromist is brilliant for help with congestion. I've got a head cold and it's the only thing that's helping, a little spray of that and I can actually breathe enough to get to sleep

Be careful using nasal decongestants, as they can cause rebound congestion. There’s a thread on here about people becoming addicted to Sudafed. I was reading it they other day as I had a head cold with bad nasal congestion and after a week or two the nasal congestion suddenly returned and was really bad. I didn’t want to use Sudafed again. I found sleeping with extra pillows to keep head raised and I also got some olbas oil.
i also read recently that the nasal decongestant in cold remedies has been found to be in effective.

Yep they're being banned in the US

Maybe try inhaling a few drops of Olbas oil from a bowl of warm water. Careful not to get it in your eyes.

madeinmanc · 27/09/2023 14:37

Also, guaifenisin (sp?) clears mucus, I think.

cocksstrideintheevening · 27/09/2023 14:47

I'm a recent convert to Sterimar. I always end up with sinusitis so take Sudafed and an antihistamine.

Paracetamol is useless to me, has to be Nurofen to have any anti-inflammatory effect at all. Steam, steam and more steam. Drink endless hot lemon juice with honey whilst sitting in a hot bath then have a bowl of brothy soup. Olbas oil in a bowl of hot water to inhale with towel over head. Last ditch attempt -Oregano oil in a bowl of hot water with towel over head (be careful it's VERY VERY VERY strong) Good luck!
