Fruit flies!! Omg help

The house is full of them 😬 last night I poured myself a red wine and popped into the kitchen and two had drowned in it. Had to pour it away. A line was crossed.

I can’t find any rotting fruit etc anywhere. There is no smell. I have set wine traps, vinegar traps etc and they never seem to land in them (but my glass of wine was fair game - how do they know?!)

any tips because they are driving me mental!

I always spray my fruit and veg with a diluted vinegar mixture as soon as I get them home to kill the eggs, then rinse. It also kills anything else so they don't mold. It helps strawberries and whatever else last much longer. Hope one of the suggested solutions works though, I've never had any luck with them so I just try and prevent instead.

Get a zapper tennis racket (alongside other remedies recommended)

Won’t be more effective probably but the satisfaction of hearing/seeing the buggers incinerated (add your own curses) is worth the endless swatting around/other measures.

I apologise to my numerous spider residents when getting one of the buggers, but of course remind the 8 legged ones they should be doing a better job in the first place.

Do you have any house plants? They’re not quite the same as fruit flies but very similar in size, live in the compost. If you have any house plants try coveting the compost with fine gravel. You could hang up the old fashioned sticky paper fly traps, gross but they work. You can also get sticky shapes you put in plant pots.

This is your friend...I use it multiple times a day to zap the wee buggers

We use a couple of glass ramikins from the Gu desserts, Pringle lids with holes in them and apple cider vinegar.

Have you got any over-watered house plants? They like soggy soil.

This! I’ve had loads of them recently, turns out this is more likely

Fungus Gnats

I stopped watering them, raked all the compost/soil with a fork to get air in and gave them a light spray of flea spray 🙈problem solved well, it was when I’d cleaned up hundreds of dead flies

Why can you never get them while they are flying. It’s literally impossible! I noticed some in our kitchen last night while we were having dinner. DH was doing random claps and didn’t get one, and I just felt like I was having dinner with Mick Jagger

Small shallow bowl with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of washing up liquid. It works. It’s fruit fly carnage in the morning. Sad times.

We do this too and it really works.
