Scared about my job interview today

Whatsmyusername1235 · 26/09/2023 08:08

Its later today and I’m feeling really anxious.
I haven’t had an interview since 2021 and that was on teams, but this interview is face to face.
Ive been revising answers for all the possible questions they could ask but I really, really want this job.
Do you have any tips?
TIA

Smile a lot, take a sip of water before you answer any questions to give you a moment to think. Don’t be scared to ask them to repeat questions.

They already like you if they want to interview you! Good luck!

Place this hour of this day in the spectrum of time and realise how tiny it is. Place the event of the interview in the vast continuum of the billions of events which are happening to people and nature over the entire universe. And breathe! It’s a short moment in time - approach it with curiosity and a sense of excitement. Good luck!

Whatsmyusername1235 · 26/09/2023 08:18

Thank you so much both of you!
I’ll try and not look too scared. It’s just a job that I really want.

Just be yourself. When I interview I look for genuine people that will fit well in my team. I can teach you what I need you to know, put you through qualifications, but I can't teach someone how to get on with my stakeholders etc.

Make sure you are clear and calm when speaking. I like to hire confidence but not cockiness, if you don't know an answer, be honest and tell them you don't know.

I wish you luck OP. Go smash it!

PheonixAndTheCarpet · 26/09/2023 08:26

My dd would say to manifest…tell yourself over and over that you’re going to get the job, good luck 🤞🏻

AbbeyGailsParty · 26/09/2023 08:35

Turn your mindset around. You’re not scared, you’re excited. You’re as interested in their company as they are you. Have a good question to ask.

I once swung a job I wanted and another candidate told me after feedback they were impressed I was the only one who asked a question about the company.

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 26/09/2023 08:55

If they’re the type of company to have “values” on their website, and try to work those words into the answers you’ve revised. Like I built “trust” by doing blah blah blah…

OldTinHat · 26/09/2023 09:04

Try and turn it on its head. You're interviewing them!

Do you want to spend hours of your time with this firm? Are they worthy of your skills? Do you like them?

Good luck!

VanillaFlotilla · 26/09/2023 09:23

I once got advice from a professional interview adviser and something I learned, which has proven useful, is to make sure you have a good answer prepared (and well practised) to the question "Tell me about yourself". This question usually comes up at the beginning of the interview and is your chance to make a strong first impression. You should be able to answer the question fluidly and concisely, and use the opportunity to highlight aspects of your background/experience that are relevant to the job you're interview for, ie treat it as a sales pitch not just a run-down of your CV.

That's probably obvious to most people (!) but I found it helpful

Echobelly · 26/09/2023 09:26

At the end, ask 'Is there anything else you'd like to know about me and my experience that we haven't covered?', this avoids a scenario that DH once had where the feedback was 'Well you didn't have any experience in X' and actually he did, but they never asked and he hadn't been made aware they wanted it, so this question spurs them to ask the stuff they need to and avoid that sort of annoying gap.

Echobelly · 26/09/2023 09:26

Also, I had job interviews for the first time in 10 years last year and I got a job on my second attempt, so don't be daunted!

Ceit · 26/09/2023 09:30

Write down the examples you want to use and the questions you want to ask, and don't be afraid to consult these if you have to. Everyone understands people are nervous during an interview, and I think pp advice to reframe it as excitement is also really helpful. Good luck- I have an interview today too, although somewhat lower stakes, I still want to make a good impression and am feelingthe butterflies!

Iheartpizza · 26/09/2023 11:12

Easier said than done when you're nervous but try to relax, build a good rapport with the panel. Be friendly, polite and take a moment to consider your answers before you say anything.

Also I'd have a couple of questions ready for them - interviewers usually ask if you have anything you'd like to ask them, so a couple of well thought out questions will come across well.

Good luck!

Whatsmyusername1235 · 26/09/2023 14:55

Thank you so much everyone 😀

I have read through all the really useful advise from you all and it helped. I have not long got out of the interview and they will let me know tonight if I have been successful.

Fingers crossed for you!
.I always know during the interview if I've got it, not cause they say as much, but because the vibe changes in my mind 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whatsmyusername1235 · 26/09/2023 20:49

I got the job 😁

Thank you everyone!

Congratulations!!

AtlasPine · 27/09/2023 09:44

Well done! So pleased to hear that.

Ilefttownonsaturday · 27/09/2023 09:53

I was on an interview panel recent and the person who got the job was a little under qualified than the rest. However, she got it be she came across confident, smiling and polite. When she couldn't answer a question, she turned it round by saying although I don't have experience in x, I have experience in y & gave a related example.

The panel felt she could be taught because she was willing to learn and came across as less arrogant than the rest of the candidates.

Good luck!

Ilefttownonsaturday · 27/09/2023 09:53

Ah just saw the update. Congratulations!
