Dyslexia in children!

Please tell me how your children presented?

DD 8 is in year 4 and has an EHC plan due to her speech delay, she was speech delayed when starting school and her speech is often still unclear. She has however been signed off SALT. Shes not getting the right support at school though - in my opinion.

she also has gross motor skill delays and I am pushing for an OT assessment for dyspraxia or thinking of going private - which we had to do for older DS who is autistic.

but I believe she could also have dyslexia but I’m not really sure. She can barely read past simple words and really struggles with phonics despite trying so hard. Her writing is pretty neat but she doesn’t really know what she’s writing half the time and she gets letters muddled.

my main concern is the reading. She’s at least 3 years behind age expected.

she’s pretty good at maths and is a great artist!

shall I push for a dyslexia screening?

Absolutely get her evaluated- everything you describe is consistent with dyslexia , the early you know the sooner she get the learning support she needs.

Good luck with trying to get an assessment. When DS2 needed assessment, our local authority did not employ an Ed Pysch. We paid for DS2 be assessed, it cost £420, this was 10 years ago, ouch. But we had no choice, as we had no idea when the post would be filled and could imagine the backlog. DS2 was found to be severely dyslexic. He left school with just 1 GCSE, did not go to college, took apprenticeship, he is 20 now works in a specific area of tech, which he is has very good & desirable skills.

Thank you, I’ve heard of this a lot and knows of a few parents who have gone private - we would do this. I’m hoping because she has an EHC plan this will help as they don’t spend her funding on much otherwise 🫣

in my area Ed psychs are very short too and only see a certain amount of children per school per year!

it is great that he’s found a job he excels in 💗

so lovely to hear about success stories as a fellow dyslexic! By contrast, I was able to pursue academia got a first from imperial and am currently doing a PhD. Dyslexics are gifted just in a different way- I’m still a terrible speller and can’t read the time! It’s all about the getting the right support and encouragement ❤️

We have a similar situation in that older DD diagnosed ASD. Younger DD had glue ear and school were supposed to put in place SALT but never did. Glue ear resolved but we thought her difficulty with reading was due to being very young in year and missing so much phonics due to glue ear and lack of support from school.

Fast forward to year 8 and I paid £350 for private dyslexia assessment. My concerns have been dismissed by teachers at every year in primary and now secondary as well. DD is definitely very dyslexic with extremely poor working memory. Probably dyspraxia as well according to assessor. Still trying to get support from school but DD doing too well apparently. She had very low self esteem and is very shy. She stumbles over her words so us afraid to speak in class.
