Potential fraud via FB - who should we report this to?

My BIL has adult children from a previous relationship.
His eldest is 30. He is a lovely lad. He is also autistic.

Last week dsis and bil found out his ds has been in contact with a woman (online) for over a year. Apparently she, somehow, contacted him via Facebook messenger. She is from America and he said they are in a relationship and soon she will be coming over to the U.K. to visit him. It also transpired he had sent her approx £100.

They have never spoken or messaged via messenger etc. He has not physically seen what she looks like.

Well, yesterday bil looked into it further and he’s actually sent her/them £6000!

Ds is adamant everything is above board, that they are a couple in love and she’ll will be coming over to visit soon.

I am not sure of the absolute details but dsis says it looks as though he has been purchasing some kind of vouchers which he either purchases here or via FB and sends over to ‘her’.

It is obviously some kind of online scam and heartbreaking because he is such a lovely lad and only earns minimum wage. We are enraged that someone has taken advantage of his vulnerability.

Dsis says she is going to block this person on FB but I’ve told her not to do that as tracing them will be more difficult, best to keep the conversations going for the meantime.

But where is the best place to report this? I doubt very much he will see any of his £6k again. I suggested contacting his bank first and they may be able to advise from there?

Any advice?

Action fraud. His bank and perhaps limit his bank access for a bit.

crackfoxy Thank you. I will pass that on.

Oh no, that is so sad. The criminals who do this are so slick. Your BILs son is one of many. At least you have found out.

You can report to action fraud and Facebook but I suspect there is nothing that can be done. The 'person' might be from anywhere in the world.
