11 month old spits out food: is this normal?

DD is 11 months. Her older brother ate massive amounts of food so I’m not sure what to compare to.

DD has lots of foods she likes, typically starchy (baguette, noodles, spaghetti), but also fruit and veg like oranges, broccoli, watermelon. She’s fine with purées and will pick up bits of spaghetti, lentils, rice and feed herself with no issue, but when she tries for bigger things she often sort of mashes them in her mouth and spits them out. Even with things she likes, I often find half of it on the floor after a meal - with watermelon for example, she’ll take a piece and chew/suck it and then spit out the pulpy bit. She was weighed at the HV drop-in a few weeks ago and has levelled off a bit which they said was normal, but it was only after nursery commented on her spitting out food that I thought maybe there’s something going on with her? She has six teeth so I reckon she should be able to do some biting at least?

Also, she does cough/choke a bit on larger things (if I cut a slice of bread into small squares for example). I honestly have no recollection of this from my first so no clue whether this is normal or not!

Obviously you’re worried and you have an older child so I would trust that instinct. But it’s obviously normal for children to be fickle about food and change their mind one minute to the next what they like. My son only had 1 tooth at 11 months so I don’t think it’s that. Sorry I can’t help but didn’t want to read and run.

She's exploring textures and flavours, and learning to keep food in her mouth. Around her age, growth starts to show a little which shows in her appetite. As long as she's happy and energetic and obviously healthy, all is fine.

Thank you both, I assumed it was normal until nursery commented on it. Although she is still just settling in there so perhaps doesn’t feel so comfortably eating.

Perhaps he is a food or dining critic in the making. Seriously I wouldnt worry so long as he is well and thriving. All children are different.
