Mobile contracts 😡

Does anyone else have the situation where one person ‘bought’ more than one phone (ie for him and me) and has the contract in his name, so I can’t do anything with the contract ?
Im trying to break the contract as I don’t like the fact that DH can go online and see who/when I’ve phoned/text.
I think this is a lack of confidentiality and goes against GDPR, but would the company just say that both phones are his, so I’ve not got a leg to stand on ?

We do the same, both phones on my account with EE as you can get pretty big multi-line discounts and can data gift (so the one with the big discount can get a big data package and share it). Never occured to me to even look at whether I could see DHs texts/calls. But then again the app is on both phones, both can access freely to transfer data and modify add ons etc so I guess he could use that to see mine too. Doubt he's even thought about it either.

ordinarybarbie · 24/09/2023 13:15

If you can answer the security questions just call and say you're him, they can't prove that you're not. However if the contract is still running then you'll need to pay off the cost to the end of the contract period anyway.

Just ask your husband to authorise a change of ownership for your line. They will do a credit check on you and transfer the line into your own name.

I have a sim only contract with Tesco Mobile and it doesn't seem to itemise calls and texts, it just says how many you have made so just a number, I can't find any further detailing, I just looked. BT home phones itemise calls and who you called, are you maybe thinking of that.

RogueFemale · 24/09/2023 13:23

I've got O2 pay-as-you go, £10 a month. Just sign up and insert the SIM in your existing phone. No 'contract' as such just a commitment to spend £10 a month which you can stop at any time.

User19537876 · 24/09/2023 13:31

You don't want to waste money if your DH can't see anything anyway, I would probably ask him for the log in details to set your mind at rest

Thewizardbinbag · 24/09/2023 15:00

It’s really nothing to do with GDPR though. The contract is in his name, he owns it, as far as they are concerned, he is the one paying for it. It’s his, not yours. So him having access to the itemised bill is not a breach.

You say he isn’t even checking it so who cares? And why don’t you just get the log in details for the account and then you have access as well, and can change your data plan for a cheaper one etc.

How can I change the data plan to a cheaper one if I’m under a contract ?

No, it’s the mobile phone .

@DustyLee123
You said you’re with Tesco. Tesco mobile allow you to change your data part of your contract, and pay more or less depending on if you move up or down on the data.

You can’t change your minutes or texts allowance I don’t think, but the data allowance part of your contract is separate and flexible. You log onto your account and go to the data plan for your phone and change it.

WhatACluster · 24/09/2023 15:51

This really is a bit odd to me…

Dh pays for both our contracts (Vodafone) and I’ve got zero issues with him looking up my calls and texts also pre menopausal

I’d get a smarty SIM card and swap them over if your that insistent you don’t want him knowing.

Or use the online chat thingy and see if you can get it taken off and take out your own?!?

WhatACluster · 24/09/2023 15:52

When I got a discount from 02 I used to have both contracts in my name before I get jumped on for letting my dh pay 😂

Certainlyreally · 24/09/2023 15:56

Are you paying for your contract?

itsmeafterall · 24/09/2023 16:08

I think o2 are doing a deal where they pay off your old contract. I saw an advert for it yesterday.

Might be worth looking at

I will be getting my own then, but there’s over 12 months to go still.
Very frustrating that I can’t just slide it across into my name.

You can. You can complete a change of ownership. That literally transfers every part of it into your own name. It normally restarts the contract period and you both have to agree to do it etc but that is the answer to your issue I’d say.

I asked Tesco on messenger and was told that I have to wait until the contract is expiring.

I’ve just had a look on the app but can’t see where.
It offers to add data, that’s all I can see.

You wouldn’t be able to reduce the tariff though until you’ve reached the point of being eligible for upgrade or become out of contract. Your plan would be at the same cost as it is now if you were to do a change of ownership. As it stands the account holder is the only person able to request an itemised bill for any line on their account, which does list every call and text made from the number. To be fair, if you say he hasn’t looked, and there’s nothing to see, I don’t think there’s any reason to change anything. But if you’d prefer your own things in your own name then ask him to call your network and get it done.

Yesiamtiredactually · 24/09/2023 16:29

DustyLee123 · 24/09/2023 16:24

That’s incorrect. You can do a change of ownership anytime. People do them all the time. They normally need to speak to both parties though or sometimes you can complete in store if you’re both there with the correct identification.

DustyLee123 · 24/09/2023 16:30

The reason I know he can see other people’s texts and calls is because he did it on our DD’s phone when she was on our plan.
It’s like I’m not ‘in control’ of my own phone. Even though it’s in his name, because he got it me as a present, it’s my phone with my long held number in it and my contacts/photos etc. and it’s paid for out of our joint account.

he can 100% check/see as they’re technically his. Whatever reason you want is fine, you can take a trip into a Tesco with a Tesco mobile store in it, both bring your identification and problem solved. You won’t lose your number or change anything other than the name that it’s in will be yours.

What sort of phone do you have? check how much they go for on eBay, sell it and put it towards buying out of your contract. I had an iPhone 13 which I've just sold for £240 which I've put towards buying myself out of the last 12mths of my phone contract. (£360) and starting a new cheaper contract with a different company.
