How much has insurance cost for your newly licenced teen and whose it with? DD has her test soon and is completely dispirited that we won't be able to afford insurance if she passes. She's worried enough about passing, but the insurance she's on atm ends the second she passes (if she does), she can't even drive home atm

I think its always a rule that you can't drive home if you've passed your test. Was the same for me when i passed mine like maybe 15 years ago i think.

Id just go on a few comparison sotes, think its pretty standard for new drivers to need a blackbox fitted these days too.

As for pricing.. i dont think its as bad as it used to be, the black boxes bring it down a bit i think

DD or the car she's driving is not eligible for a black box. Comparison site wete pulling up £3000+

Will she have her own car or is she driving yours? We used Marmalade which has a 'pay as you go' option which worked really well for us. Despite passing first time my son doesn't particularly enjoy driving so just makes the journeys he has to. Originally that was to college and occasionally to work.

OhDoh · 24/09/2023 10:56

My friends son just had a 2015 corsa insured and cost them 2.4K. It brought it down a bit with having his mum as a named driver

What's the car? That will be a huge part of the problem.

She's driving a car owned by another family member. I have my own car

My boyfriends daughter just passed her test and has a focus. It was just over £2000 in her name with a black box. She's also limited on her mileage

SuzanneV · 24/09/2023 11:05

Another vote for Marmalade, my DS is away at uni but drives in the holidays, it also monitors their driving.

UncomfortableSilence · 24/09/2023 11:08

We used Adrian Flux for DD. She has a Vauxhall Adam and it was £1400 with a black box. Appreciate you said a black box is not an option so would expect it to be several thousand.

Unfortunately this is just how it is for their first year, insurance prices have also increased hugely in general this year, it's tough for them.

Mintyt · 24/09/2023 11:08

It's difficult to insure a car you or you partner don't own as you have no insurable interest in the car. So if you have an accident they cannot pay out to you as you don't own the car. Young drivers are very expensive to insure. But a comparison site is the best way and Compare the Market is easy to navigate

TheFallenMadonna · 24/09/2023 11:10

My 22yo was £1200 with a black box for his first insurance in his own name. Having DH as a named driver brought it down from £1400.

moonlike · 24/09/2023 11:24

My sons first year was £2200 without black box. We were advised against the black box as they can really penalise you for things like driving at night. At the time my sons gf lived in another town so he would have been regularly driving at night.

We found Direct Line to be the cheapest

WhamBamThankU · 24/09/2023 11:34

How is it not suitable for a black box? I have one and it's just a little plastic box thing that suctions onto the dashboard connected by Bluetooth.

Icedlatteplease · 24/09/2023 13:02

Literally no clue. But nowhere has offered a black box.
She only wants to travel to her work and college (hasn't got time for much else 😜)

Nana is happy to sign the cafe over to her, but it doesn't seem to make any difference atm

How long does it take for premiums to go down?

But nowhere has offered a black box.

If you are using comparison sites make sure you haven't ticket a box to exclude box quotes.

moonlike · 24/09/2023 16:47

My son's went from £2200 in year 1 to £1800 in year 2. His year 2 renewal was about £1950 but he rang them up and negotiated a discount. Year 3 renewal was c£1400 but he changed car to a sportier one and it went back to £2200.
