Tube near Staines Upon Thames

FoodieToo · 23/09/2023 13:56

We are coming over to London again next weekend to go to Thorpe and a match . Incredibly , there is another train strike. There was one the last day we were over in August !

This one seems to be an 'all out' strike .

Can anyone advise what is the nearest underground station to Staines Upon Thames please ? Our son will be at the West Ham match and needs to get from city centre to Staines without any trains ....

Thank you so much for any local help. I have looked but it's rather unclear .

Download the Citymapper app though, for live options, as the transport system usually goes to pot on strike days.

That's what it's called?

Anyhoo...

Tube to Hatton Cross and Uber would be my suggestion.

Yeah on paper.

I live not far from there now . Used to live 30 miles away. Never known anyone ever anywhere call is SUT…

Ali G however … he refers to it as Staines massive ! Ya get me!!!

Honestly? I travel a lot by public transport. It will likely be chaos on a strike day. It can be difficult and crowded enough on non-strike days. I wouldn't attempt this journey on a strike day. People are mentioning Elizabeth Line and Overground. You need to check if these are affected by strike.

Bluesclues1 · 23/09/2023 16:55

The Elizabeth Line often runs when there are national rail strikes - I’ve been able to get into London without issue on most recent strike days. You just have to check the timetable a couple of days before as it’s usually a limited service and starts/finishes early.

there are also usually limited services between Windsor and Waterloo (via Staines) on strike days too. They start at about 8am and end at about 6pm. Check on the South Western website the week before.

According to this page the National Rail journey planner is up to date for next weekend so you can check what is and isn't running.

Tube to Hounslow West (Piccadilly line) then 203 bus all the way to staines.

I’d get the tube to Heathrow T5 and get the number 8 or X442 bus, or Hatton Cross and then the 203 bus - not sure which option is quicker.

That's the way my son goes

Check if the Lizzie Line is affected by the strikes before relying on it for Heathrow travel - I have a feeling it falls under train rather than tube when strike action hits.

It's running - and a much better option from Stratford than the Piccadilly.

Thanks again , everyone . I didn't realise it wasn't 'Upon Thames' as I live in Dublin . But as I love London so much I am over a lot . I think this is our 5th visit this year .......

We can't NOT come as have tickets for the West Ham match ( well my son and husband do ) and then we all have tickets for Thorpe on Sunday with free unlimited Fast Pass !!! Almost bursting with excitement and just couldn't believe it last night when I went on to Trainline to buy tickets to discover there were NO trains .

We will be flying to Gatwick and the non match goers will get an Uber straight to Staines ( not 'Upon Thames' ) but my son then needs to get from the London Stadium out to Staines to meet us in the Premier Inn .

Have downloaded TFL and will play around with that now . I think maybe Tube to Hatton Cross or Hounslow and then an Uber or a bus ? Bus 203.

I really am so grateful everyone , thank you .

The upon Thames was added 20 years ago, so unless you knew of it previous to that why would you know? Not sure why anyone thought it worthy of a mention Hmm

Get the CityMapper app as well as TfL, it's the go-to source of info.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 23/09/2023 18:26

Your son should also be aware that there might be big queues for the buses, so the earlier he can be the better.

FoodieToo · 23/09/2023 18:34

I think an Uber maybe might be better . Doesn't seem that expensive but probably in huge demand . Ah we will get there, hopefully !!
Will also get CityMapper .

Bluesclues that would be amazing , if it were running . When we were there in August most trains were running , despite the strike. We just ended up stuck trying to get to Gatwick after a show as the late trains were cancelled.

Gatwick to Staines is going to cost a lot in an uber! It's about an hour's drive (I know because I live close to Gatwick and my parents live close to Staines!)

Can you book a coach transfer to Heathrow and then one group can tube to the match and one uber to staines?

FoodieToo · 23/09/2023 20:02

Thank you Odeto Barney . I did a 'dummy' with Uber and it came in as about 74 pounds . As there are 5 of us going to Staines and 2 into the match it seemed ok value ?

OP posts:
SoRainbowRhythms · 23/09/2023 20:05

Ubers will surge massively during a train strike, and you'll need an XL for 5 people. Agree with PP that a coach is the best option.

AlfredaTheGrape · 23/09/2023 20:13

Agree that Citymapper is also good (sometimes better). It looks like getting on the Elizabeth Line is a good bet but be aware that there is an additional charge compared to normal Oyster/contactless fares when travelling to/from Heathrow on that line which will add up for a family of four. Try https://oysterfares.com/fare-finder/ and https://www.tubecalculator.co.uk/ and the TFL information on children, families, Oyster & Contactless, and Travel Cards, to work out your best bet and not be overcharged.

You'll be fine, just allow extra time to hang around for buses or to change route. Try to avoid routes where you could get "stuck" (e.g. because there's only one bus for that leg) and favour transport hubs that allow for more options for the next leg. There are transport maps inc all modes at every station and bus maps at many bus stops, and TFL staff are helpful, if you find yourself without phone or confused.

Remember the suggested routes assume that all the components come on time with seamless changes and no delays en route, that you never popp in the shop or can't get across the road, so the journey time would be longer as a starting point than that given, 95% of the time. I usually add at least 15 mins per hour to a suggested time and 30 mins per hour if I cannot afford to be late.

Also don't worry about calling it Staines-upon-Thames (because that is its name!). Even though most people shorten it to Staines and you will sound more knowledgeable if you do too - but it really doesn't matter, London is full of people visiting or newly arrived (or even not) who aren't sure how to pronounce or shorten names of things. Likewise there's Kingston-upon-Thames and Richmond-upon-Thames (etc.), usually shortened when it's obvious what is meant, but sometimes not because there is a Kingston-upon-Hull (usually known as Hull) and a Richmond in Yorkshire (usually known as Richmond) elsewhere in the country. Have fun on your trip 😁

CherrySocks · 23/09/2023 20:51

Don't get an Uber on a strike day, they massively hike up the fares

Yes, but that's not accounting for surge pricing, which there will be during a train strike. I'd be surprised if you get any change from £150! And availability may be poor, too.

CheersToMe · 23/09/2023 21:15

Might be worth pre booking a regular minicab to do the Gatwick run.

Thelondonone · 23/09/2023 21:31

I tried to book a taxi from Gatwick to ealing for 5 people in the last train strike and it was £120. The Elizabeth line does run during rail strikes and is by far the fastest way from east to west (it’s definitely the best way to get back across London). So he should go to Heathrow then get a bus or cab. How will he get from Gatwick to Stratford?

Oblomov23 · 23/09/2023 21:36

We go to Hatton Cross. But you do know getting from there to TP is horrendous.

Oh I hope not . The last time we were over there was a strike too and we had to get an Uber from Morden to Gatwick and it was very reasonable . So fingers crossed.

By Uber ? Why ?
