Dyslexic child

My DS is almost definitely dyslexic.

Can people please give me some ideas for what works well for their dyslexic child.

We've looked at famous dyslexic people and he’ll be using a laptop in class. We’re also looking at a specialist tutor to help him.

We’re making it mega positive for him, calling it his super power. I also have a few friends who are dyslexic so we’re going to get them to speak to him.

Any advice/ideas/useful resources would be welcome.

How old is he? If he’s coming up to exam years it’s worth finding out what evidence his exam boards need to allow him to use the laptop and have extra time so that you can make sure the school are able to apply for him.

Sorry, he is 8.

I don’t think KS2 SATs and dyslexia go together well.

Many children with a dyslexia diagnosis sit KS2 SATs with access arrangements.

OP, the first thing you need to do is to actually have him assessed. Dyslexia encompasses many different strands where a child may have difficulty. Schools can screen in the first place to determine his ‘at risk’ quotient. From that, they can put appropriate interventions in place, and if the ARQ is high, refer him on for a full assessment. Alternatively you could arrange a private assessment - there are many private dyslexia assessors out there. The absolute worst thing you can do is assume a diagnosis!

Coloured glasses. When he got assessed did they try different tinted overlays? If they helped getting it properly assessed and getting the exact correct shade can make an unbelievable difference.

Sorry just reread. Get him assessed first!

They will then give a list of adjustments he needs for school.
