In search of an electric car...

Does anyone have an electric car that can fit 2 tall people in at once that isn't a tesla?
I have been looking for a while but all the ones I've tried have head room in the front but are limited in the back and I have a very tall DS and DH to fit in the car.
we have tried the Peugeot E-2008, Kia e-Niro, Skoda Enyaq, Hyundai ioniq and Kona, MG Zs. And possibly some more that I've forgotten!

I have a Citroen eBerlingo. It seats 7 tall adults comfortably. I hated the shape at first but now I love it, the steering is great, and I can fit whole wardrobes in it! You can get a smaller 5 seater version that still has the height.

ThreeLocusts · 22/09/2023 23:18

There's supposed to be a new model of the Peugeot 208 coming out, maybe roomier? Of the electric cards my carpool offers, that's the one I like best.

Justwingingit2005 · 23/09/2023 00:04

We have 3 teen boys. Oldest 6ft. They all fit in the back. We have a 23 plate, so has the 'petrol' style transmission tunnel through thr middle, try and get a new model. Will be more leg room in middle at the back.

I’ve got a Mustang Mach E, plenty of room in that, front and back.

Maxiedog123 · 23/09/2023 02:00

Volvo XC40 or XC60?

Ruthietuthie · 23/09/2023 02:15

I have an Audi Q8 E-tron and LOVE it. Very spacious.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/09/2023 04:06

My DH has an Audi. I don't know the model but it is very roomy.

Cmini · 23/09/2023 04:12

Peugeot eRifter. Range isn't fantastic and it's very utilitarian looking but, like the Berlingo, loads of room.

Looksonthebrightside · 23/09/2023 06:25

Plenty of room for the v tall teen boys in the back of my Volvo xc40. DH has a BMW I4 and that’s fine too although would be a slight squish to get 3 very large people in the back but I think that’s the case with most cars.

littlefireseverywhere · 23/09/2023 07:05

Polestar 3 now out, it’s huge.

Lancelottie · 23/09/2023 07:09

Taking notes here as we still haven't found one DH fits in at all (including Tesla) at 6ft8-and-a-bit.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 23/09/2023 07:17

We have a Hyundai Ioniq 5, the back seats are on rails and can move backwards and forwards. For a tall passenger behind a tall driver you can push the back seats back a good few inches.

The back seats also recline, but to get the full recline the seat part does need to come forward.

It's fantastic car (apart from having no rear wiper 🥴). If we could afford one that wasn't a company car we'd have 2!

😱you are kidding about the rear seats? Why on Earth didn't the Hyundai dealer point that out when we spent AGES in the dealership trying out the cars with tall people in tow?! We told them exactly what we were looking for and what the problem was. Mind boggled!
Hyundai was top of my list too because the car gets such good reviews, guess that's a return trip to the garage needed then.

Is it height or legroom you're struggling with in the back? My husband is only 6ft but with short legs so he's 'tall' when sitting and he struggles in the back of most modern cars

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/09/2023 07:40

I've no help on the electric cars @Crabacus , but I've only discovered this week that cars being "too short" is a thing.

DH - 6'2"; DS - 6'3"; DD - 5'7", Me- 5'8".

The boys are very leggy. We all struggled to fit in my Golf for a trip away. Hadn't realised this could. D. "Thing" until now as dh used to have a van with back seats.

adagio · 23/09/2023 07:51

Out of interest, how does everyone afford electric cars? Well any new ish cars? The prices are eye watering even on a monthly finance package.

Feels like ‘new cars’ have jumped much more than my head expects - a golf 20 years ago was about 16k, but now it’s 35k! Is it just me or does that not quite make sense?

Crabacus · 23/09/2023 07:59

@MetaMette it can be both or either, depending on the car. We were mostly looking for cars last year when DS was 6'2" and it seemed to be more commonly leg room but there were some that didn't have enough headroom too (MG ZS for example). We found that that's specific to the electric version of cars, when there was also a petrol version it'd mostly be fine but they seem to lose an inch or two of headroom in electric ones.
i gave up last year because we couldn't find ANYTHING but I will need to replace my current car at some point soon. Ive had 7 seater MPVs for the last 10+ years from when they all needed a car seat at the same time and they are ideal! But no electric versions.

We have id4. Currently have isofix car seat on one back seat, and can fit two tall adults still on middle and side seat.

I think the seats move back further also (but we use the large boot a lot so never needed to)

@adagio - ours is on 5 year lease to buy. Our monthly lease over the year works out cheaper per year than our old 17 year old banger we bought outright.

New electric- the lease includes everything. All service, insurance, mot, AA equivalent. It costs around €10-15 max to charge at home a month

Old 17year old banger - every Mot had large repair costs. By the end The axel was replaced, exhaust fell off, and all new breaks needed in last MoT, cost €€. Was around €100 a month petrol (would be more now as petrol has increased), insurance here was €160 per month for third party only (not uk), etc etc…

You’re spot on! Both my husband and & I have been looking for new cars, myself because I’m trying to downsize from my tank of a car and my husband because he’s got an electric car and the infrastructure just isn’t there for a driver who regularly drives north to south and uses hotels for a big chunk of the week!

We both drive long distances so whilst we are not bothered about luxury cars we do want a work horse type of vehicle and normal cars were coming in at 600+ a month! So weirdly BMW did us a great deal on two cars where we are both paying 500 each! (Which is cheap compared to other manufacturers)

We are getting the same car in the same colour and pick them up on the same day 😆

These car chargers really have opened both of our eyes to the prices! It’s shocking!! Yes everything has gone up but not by 10-20k 😱 golf’s we’re coming in at 750 per month when I popped in , my golf a few years ago was about 200-300ish 🫣

jolenethea · 23/09/2023 08:11

VW ID4 is very roomy, can't see it having any issues with taller people

LaundryWoes · 23/09/2023 08:12

DH recently got a VW id4, plenty of leg room in the front and back, and the boot is massive.

Myotherusernamesafunnyone · 23/09/2023 08:21

I have a BMW ix3

My last car was a Golf, bought new in 2011, and was £21K.

I’ve had my EV (Hyundai Kona) since November 2020. The list price at the time was £41.5K, minus £3K government grant. I bought it 5 months old with 3K miles on the clock and paid £32,400. I didn’t check what a new Golf would have been then, but I imagine it would have been a good bit more than I had paid nearly 10 years previously.

The Golf at the time cost me about £800 a year in diesel - would be more like £1100 now. The EV was costing me around £100 a year in electricity charging at home - so there’s a contribution to higher monthly payments, though personally I prefer to own it outright.

So, how do people afford them:-

  1. Reckon in the lower running costs (servicing is cheaper too, and there’s less to go wrong, so over time repairs will be less) - although tbf that does depend on charging mostly at home.
  2. Buy used when you would otherwise buy new
  3. Buy 3-year-old when you would normally buy 1-year-old

etc.

If you want an EV, you will find a way to have an EV. If you don’t want an EV, every potential pitfall will appear insurmountable.

We’re a tall family and I’ve been shopping for an electric car recently. I was amazed by the lack of room in the back seats.
I also found the Japanese cars (Lexus, Hyundai, Nissan) to be particularly bad for headroom in the front seats.
The Mercedes EQB has space in the front but no point choosing it as a 7 seater unless your back row passengers are little dolls.
BMW iX3 was a front runner but in the end we preferred the way the Audi Q8 Etron drove plus it comfortably fits two tall kids in the back

faban · 23/09/2023 12:12

Have a look at genesis. I was really impressed
