What to take on rainy trip away with inlaws?

This weekend I'm going away to Dorset with DP, the inlaws, and DP's brother and brother's gf. Plan was originally to do walks and go to the beach etc, but the forecast looks like it's going to be a washout.

We're staying in a nice cottage in the middle of nowhere. What would you take as activities for a group of adults to do in the evenings/for bad weather? We all like boardgames so will take a few, but any other ideas? Tbh I've got a pile of books I'd love to plough through but MIL isn't a reader, and guess that would be a bit antisocial!

Does your mil read magazines or do word searches/crosswords?
Maybe she could do that while you read.

Films.

Hopefully it won't be continuous heavy rain so still go out or find some indoor places to go.

Maybe take a deck of cards? That's always handy for various games and easy to pack as won't take up any real space.
Or some snacks and plan a movie night. Plan a nice meal together where everyone takes responsibility for a different part of it. Drinking games even if you're the kind of family who would appreciate that!
Have a lovely break whatever you end up doing.

Cheese or chocolate fondue
Jigsaw

SunshineAndFizz · 22/09/2023 05:38

Cards, movies, murder mystery party, board games, nice meals to cook together.

Justmuddlingalong · 22/09/2023 05:40

Old photos.

AnxiousPangolin · 22/09/2023 07:01

A shovel.

Ridingthegravytrain · 22/09/2023 07:51

Wine. A lot of wine

Wolfricbriandumbledore · 22/09/2023 07:53

If you really can’t walk in the rain, mind-altering drugs. Lots of them.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/09/2023 08:09

Just take a raincoat and get on with it? Or just take some bottles of wine and chat? I can't think of anything worse than playing games.

LaLaLouella · 22/09/2023 08:17

Theme night to break the weekend up a bit - one of those Murder Mystery Games and then theme food and drinks around it? Dressing up as the characters if you are that kind of family? <I do appreciate that this is some peoples idea of hell on Earth though...>

Iliketulips · 22/09/2023 08:33

We'd take extra clothes and just enjoy walking - you can always break it up with a nice coffee somewhere if you don't won't to be out too long.

Just because you're away together doesn't mean you shouldn't have a bit of 'me' time' so take that book - always handy anyway if you're waiting for others to get ready. In the evenings, personally I'd read, but board games, do an extra special evening meal between you or even go for a local walk to pub if it isn't too bad.

Rocknrollstar · 22/09/2023 09:01

How about printing off photos of celebrities when they were young for people to guess or stills from movies or places round the world? Buy a large jigsaw from a charity shop that you can all do together.
Since the age of 4 I have never ever gone anywhere without a book.

Wtfnowseptember · 22/09/2023 09:04

Quiz, karaoke, cards, lots of food and drink, short walk for a pub lunch, few hours in local town...

Lobelia123 · 22/09/2023 09:12

Puzzles . . . always relaxing and gives people permission to sit in silence without having to fill the silence with talk - but you can chat as you go along if thats what you like

Id also download some films to watch together....some classics, some modern stuff on common ground...eg we had a great time over a series of weekends havign a 007 Fest and watching some of the old James Bond movies

Since everyone has to eat and eating good food is a joy, maybe plan a formal three course meal to cook with whoever likes being in the kitchen - others to lay table, lay on wine and music etc....? The activity for a special lunch can fill up a long boring rainy afternoon and its quite fun with music playing in the background and everyone with a task to do

saltnsaucey · 22/09/2023 10:05

Hot chocolate, wine and a pack of cards. I hope you get some walking done

WasThereAnotherTroyforHertoBurn · 22/09/2023 10:08

Your sanity and remember to bring it back. 😂

cocksstrideintheevening · 22/09/2023 10:10

Gin, a very large bottle and some decent rain gear

persisted · 22/09/2023 13:02

Waterproof trousers, good boots, and a rain hat.
Make sure to prep by looking on the map for the nearest pub/cafe to stomp along to.

AnnaBegins · 22/09/2023 13:16

Would any crafts be welcomed? We always take a craft "for the kids" but strangely enjoyed more by me, MIL and SIL, plus they often bring cross-stitch they're working on, or knitting. At Easter I bought some little wooden eggs for colouring/painting/decoupage type stuff.

Whataretheodds · 22/09/2023 13:21

Play "who's in the bag"
Take Risk, Monopoly?

Hooploop · 24/09/2023 10:36

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, really appreciated!

The weather hasn't been that bad actually so we've been out and done most things. We have of course got waterproofs and don't mind a bit of rain, but it was expected to be torrential and storms and flooding were forecast. A lot of the walking is coastal/along rivers so probably not the best idea.
